Steering Rack and Pump replacement

Hey all. Anyone else have to get this replaced by the dealer? My Steering Rack and Pump are making noise. Was curious if anyone else has experienced this in the MB's. I am driving an E63 if you dont already know.

That is new, but what kind of noises? We have some members with odd noises under there that may be the same.

First noise I am experiencing is when the car is fairly cold, when I turn the steering wheel left and right without moving the car I hear a popping sound like metal stressing like a creaking sound. coming from the front wheels.

Second sound is a little tougher. Doesnt actually start until you get above about 25 mph. You can also only hear it while driving alone barriers or walls or large buildings when you car hear your cars sound reflecting. I thought it sounded like a faint break squeal or metal spinning squeak. Its very faint, but you should be able to consistently produce the sound. Stealership claims its the coming from the same steering area.

The technician says that both sounds are coming from the front steering rack and pump as it is starting to fail. Mine are scheduled to be replaced monday afternoon into tuesday. SHould get it back then.
With our expensive cars we all need to be vigilant about dealing with the stealerships to fix these problems while they are uder warranty. If I wasnt so **** about my ride and had been some sorry schlub I might not have noticed or cared too much about the noises it is making.
Point is if you car is making odd noises, make sure you can repeat the sounds with the SA or demand a tehnician ride along with you so you can reproduce what its doing.
My ride is gong to hit 20k today(only like 20 miles off) The first sound had been there since the car was a few months old. Just couldnt consistanly reproduce it.
The second noise I only really noticed since it is a very faint sound in the last couple thousand miles.

Since they dont replace the rack parts themselves it is just a policy to change the whole thing. The pump is just a precaution.

Well got my car back. Everything seems to be ok for the most part now. Not 100% happy but at least mostly.

Anyway thought I would mention a couple other things that came up on my car incase anyone else with an e63 is listening. Tech also replace while he was peeking around....

Replaced Idler Pulley -pulley bearings were worn
They also replaced the Rack mount Plate.
Brake fluid reservoir was leaking...replaced cap and covering.
it also turn out my coolant thermostat was leaking too-replaced thermostat

So those are the additional items they found. If you have an e63 you should look under the hood to see if you have similar problems.

Not on my E55, but my '03 E500 had the PS pump and rack replaced two years ago. It was making a 'grumbling' or rumbling kind of noise initially, and completely failed 300 miles later (it was on an XC trip over the Thanksgiving holiday, driving to Denver from Chicago, or I would have stopped immediately). Happened at 80K miles.

I would assume that the E55 pump would be similar in nature. Replace it quick, as the pump is pricey enough ($800) but the rack is even more so ($2K or so, plus labor)...if the pump impellers let go, the metal bits will quickly destroy the rack.

my car makes a clunk when Im at a light (on the brakes), and I move my wheel to the left. I wonder if mine needs some sort of fix.

Its pretty repeatable, move left..clunk, let go, move left..clunk.

I know this is old thread, but has anyone else found other solutions besides spending $2k for parts plus labor?

2 options

1. dont lower the car excessively it will damage the rack eventually
2. you can get a used steering rack
