Steering Rack and Pump replacement
Second sound is a little tougher. Doesnt actually start until you get above about 25 mph. You can also only hear it while driving alone barriers or walls or large buildings when you car hear your cars sound reflecting. I thought it sounded like a faint break squeal or metal spinning squeak. Its very faint, but you should be able to consistently produce the sound. Stealership claims its the coming from the same steering area.
The technician says that both sounds are coming from the front steering rack and pump as it is starting to fail. Mine are scheduled to be replaced monday afternoon into tuesday. SHould get it back then.
With our expensive cars we all need to be vigilant about dealing with the stealerships to fix these problems while they are uder warranty. If I wasnt so **** about my ride and had been some sorry schlub I might not have noticed or cared too much about the noises it is making.
Point is if you car is making odd noises, make sure you can repeat the sounds with the SA or demand a tehnician ride along with you so you can reproduce what its doing.
My ride is gong to hit 20k today(only like 20 miles off) The first sound had been there since the car was a few months old. Just couldnt consistanly reproduce it.
The second noise I only really noticed since it is a very faint sound in the last couple thousand miles.

Anyway thought I would mention a couple other things that came up on my car incase anyone else with an e63 is listening. Tech also replace while he was peeking around....
Replaced Idler Pulley -pulley bearings were worn
They also replaced the Rack mount Plate.
Brake fluid reservoir was leaking...replaced cap and covering.
it also turn out my coolant thermostat was leaking too-replaced thermostat
So those are the additional items they found. If you have an e63 you should look under the hood to see if you have similar problems.

I would assume that the E55 pump would be similar in nature. Replace it quick, as the pump is pricey enough ($800) but the rack is even more so ($2K or so, plus labor)...if the pump impellers let go, the metal bits will quickly destroy the rack.

Its pretty repeatable, move left..clunk, let go, move left..clunk.
