Intake tubes on "63" engines

I put a post in the wrapped intake tubes, but I guess none of the E63 guys had a chance to read it so I thought I would start a new thread.

I want to look at this from a different perspective. The E55 has round intake tubes and our E63 has triangular ones, or at least they are not round. I think the easiest way to "maybe some" horespower potential is really to improve the air intake. I really haven't looked at a E55 motor, so I really can't speak with any authority, but it looks like from the pictures, the breathing on the 55is better, ay least from the intake side than our 63's. On a NA engine, its all about breathing. Looking at our tubes, it would be diffucult to get a good looking heat wrap, considering all of the angles the tube has. I wonder if VRP thinks that this has some possibilities, I for one, think it does.

Getting rid of the "second" filters I think helped, but to have less restrictive cooler air, is the key................Thoughts!

yes our tubes seem to be something of a hinderance for airflow. I believe VRP is working on maybe some CF tubes or something that will provide better airflow to the intake boxes(I think I read something about that).
To help increase my airflow I did a couple things.
First I bought the VRP CF air boxes. I just got word it was shipped to me last night. Hopefully have it monday. I believe this is going to make a substantial difference regarding airflow to the engine.
Second I cut off those stupid looking plastic covers MB puts over the front intake access points. Not sure if I really gained anything from it but re does feel a tad more responsive!
As far as tubes go I would like to see something come out. One last thing after I install the airbox I plan to take a dremel to cut out the plastic sides on our grills which cover the intake. I know it sounds destructive to our grills, but I think with a dremel you should be able to cut out the pieces in the grill which cover the intakes. If this doesnt make sense I can try to take a pictures and show you but cant do it right now.

Anyone got better ideas ?

When you get your air box, let me know how it works out for you! Looking at where the tube is and the stuff it has to get around, I don't know if we can get a round or oval tube to fit. Maybe one of the other "63" engines might have bigger tubes that we can modify.......anyone know it that is possible?

I believe we have two 78 mm but for some reason, they never open-up more than 70%

Will one of your TWO fit on my 55 motor? Anyone know if E63 TB will fit on on a 55?

From the pictures of E63 motor in this link, it looks like you still have one throttle body. Still two air boxes.

I could be wrong, but it looks to me like the two silver electrical plugs at the top of the air boxes are connected to the throttle bodies.

edit: The more I think about it, those are probably MAF sensors huh?

No, I'm not 100% positive we have 2, but that's what it looked like to me and to a couple of other members when we were trying to figure stuff out at the track

How about those "Air Scoops" that Vegastrashed created for his E63? Do they work?

After looking at the thread again,,,,I kind of agree with Vadim and his comments on how the engine could produce more power just by sitting still on a dyno and not moving to create a ram effect, however, I still believe that more power can be gained by freeing up any air restrictions and improve air flow. If it worked for Vic and his bimmer, and with Vegas, maybe there is something to it...I don't know. Vadim has stated that the air tubes are sufficient to flow air, but I still go back to "old school" thinking. How about wrapped tubes, with the ram air scoop? Looking at what Vegas did, he did free up the air flow by getting rid of the plastic cover and creating a more straigh shot to the tubes.......thoughts!!
