IMO, Nissan put out a bunch of overboosted prototypes to the press. Production GTR's just aren't doing too well. Recent big car magazine got high 12's in the quarter.

It's inevitable that some will be quicker and some will be slower. Manufacturing tolerances have stacked up that way for decades. Detroit’s PR reps supplied optimized test mules to the press during the muscle car era of ‘60’s. Since they all did it, it was essentially a level playing field. That the hapless consumer apparently received a dog was not their problem. That was then.

Witnessed one of Nissan’s NA road course shakedowns at Sears Point. Their technical staff was indeed talented, as it carrying some serious speed which improved perceptibly throughout the day.

Carlos Ghosn and his minions should hang their heads in shame if the production version proves to be a dud.

Perhaps. But they were easily getting 11.5-11.7 w/ the protos and now high 12's? I can understand a couple of tenths but this is way too much.

I would guess if the did anything that it was to tweak the engine map on the press cars. Tuners will soon have new maps available for these so all the power and then some should come back.

That aside, I think it is an amazing car but is one that I have ZERO interest in. I would happily buy a 997 Twin Turbo which is $50-60K more and "slower" if I wanted an AWD sports car. In fact, I would buy the 997 10 times before the Nissan once.

I posted about a week ago on another thread this very same thing. I was at the track and there was a GTR running consistant 12.7's...about 5 in a row, that's all she had in her.

I don't understand manufacturers who do this. It's the easiest way to lose credibility which Nissan has done. Imagine a buyer who thought was getting an 11.xxx 120mph car and ending up with one that does 12.7xxx 114.

Manufacturers have done 'ringers' for decades.

What is really upsetting is that magazines do not catch it and than glorify non-production cars.

I am surprised that noone has mentioned that the GTR is limited on the street to an absolute joke speed of 111mph.

Pretty much would justify the humiliating 114 trap speed with the 12.7.

Not defending the GTR at all, but it certainly makes perfect sense.

Magazine testers were all delimited for sure.

Nevermind. Typical Jim shooting his mouth off without Googling.

US limit is 156mph.

How does Nissan show us 11.5-11.7.cars @ 120+ and then deliver cars that go 12.7 @114? If this is true, they deserve no respect. Yeah, a 911tt killer....haha. You mean 4000lbs + 470hp does not = 11.5 @124?

After reading the initial press and seeing one in the flesh, I was actually interested enough in the car to put a deposit down at a local dealership. That was until the owner (whom I've purchased several cars from) said he needed "$100,000 for a car like this"..........

I hope it turns out that these low numbers are true because I want to see how may of these "$100,000" cars he will sell.

Imagine the goodwill and loyal following Nissan could've garnered by giving us a true world beater. They teased us w/ a prototype car that could but in the end delivered us a DUD. Guess what Nissan, the world is beating YOU.

Dealers had to pay $50k fee for the right to sell GT-Rs.
None will even entertain any offers with less then $25k premium.
Will see how long that will last......

of my experiences, the german manufacturers tend to undersell and overdeliver alot more than most other manufacturers. Porsche being the best example of this.

Also, if you want good numbers it's always the Japanese cars, including the price, they always look great in side by side magazine comparisons. But if you want a real world driving experience to remember, than there is no substitue for German.

After watching a stock Z06 put the smack down on a GTR on edmunds, things are really in perspective for me. The porsche has far better build quality than the nissan and is more mod friendly. Also dealers are trying to get way more than sticker for the car. I thought about porche and still haven't made a decision on what car to bet next but, at that proce range there are a lot of cars to choose from. Hell you can get a gallardo for a little over a 100K used. Even a used bentley is in that price range.

It's all about what you are after. the GTR is like the EVO 8. I still think a heavy modded evo is one of the most entertaining cars to drive but, at the end of the day it still a boy racer car that client do not want to ride in.

there will always be another car out there faster than the one you are in and that should not be the reason to buy a car.

Maybe the GT-R that was tested earlier was the higher-end model To my understanding, they're making 3 versions:

GT-R
GT-R V-Spec
GT-R EVO

The EVO edition is supposed to have 530+ hp and further weight reductions

I beat my friend's Lamborghini Superleggera with my GTR by 1/2 carlength when it was stock, while my friend has measured an 11.7@124mph on his stock GTR using Driftbox (with launch control). Dunno what's up with these US spec cars but the JDM cars seem pretty consistent with earlier tests.

Jspeed, I still get a stiffy when I think about that car.

People should also keep in mind that life hasn't been kind to some of the testers. I think it's a little too early to see if the nuts have been snipped off US Spec GTR's. If anything this is where they'd let those things unleash all their power. After all, we're all going to race them. We'll have to see when I get mine!!
