I will say IMO that the SL sounds better.

I guess I will start by saying if you take the driver out of the scenerio, the E55 has the same power as the SL55 but it is 400-500lbs lighter (depending on options to either car) go to dragtimes.com and do a comparision between the two cars and you will get a general idea. ![Popcorn](https://mbworld.org/forums/images/smilies/popc1.gif)

sl55- 493hp
e55- 469hp
but the e55 stock vs sl55 stock, the e55 will take it every time...

If you compare dyno's, the cars put down the same power. The rating of 469 hp for the E is for marketing purposes. If they are going to charge $40k more for an SL, they want it to look like the SL is stronger.

My car is of many that can prove this. I dyno'ed on a dynojet about a month ago and got 415hp and 470 torque @ the wheels...
That translates to 500hp and 566 torque @ the crank...and yes I am stock also

I've gotten to drive the crap out of both at the AMG challenges and the E is definitely more "balanced" and lighter on its sausage toes. The SL is not far behind and adds the "feel" of being in a cockpit. Straightline, I'd say it is a driver's list with the E taking slight edge. The SL may have better launches, since it has more weight in the rear? The E may have better launches because it has a longer wheelbase? Does it even?

All 55k kompressors make around 500 hp, but as others have mentioned, for marketing reasons, Mercedes changed the numbers around slightly. If you search this site, you'll see many dynos of E55s, SL55s, S55s, and even CL55s that are putting down almost the exact same numbers.

I recall reading in a mag something to the effect that, although the engines were the same in both the E and the SL, the power difference was attributable to the E having a longer, and thus more restrictive, exhaust system.

Weight is a factor and as mentioned- the hp difference is negligent at best. Apples to apples conditions, the E pulls on the SL but not by much of course.
ABC is the better suspension in IMO but the chassis feel of the E is better.
Two different cars: a four door family car than rules the road with TQ and HP or a GT cruiser/hard top vert that looks and sounds amazing and carries a powerful punch.

You did read that. That was MB's official explanation of the hp discrepancy between the E and SL. And I can't say that the exhausts are the same or different. But even if they are different, it isn't affecting power.

I've run my SL55 at the same track on the same day that JokerzWld ran his stage 1 E55 and he was consistently several tenths faster than me.

The SL has a 2.82 vs the E's 2.65 to try and make up the difference (or the E is being slowed down because with a 2.82 it kills the more costly SL55).
I had both and did many "runs" with the two cars. E pulls every time.
The SL is a high high 12 sec car stock in the 1/4 and the E is mid 12's easy.
When you get on the gas in the E it just pushes you back in your seat a whole lot more than the SL. At times the SL feels just a bit slow.
As for how the cars drive the SL is far better IMHO. My 2004 E55 had the worlds heaviest steering and it was to the point where 5 minutes of hard driving left you with a sweaty forehead (and im in pretty decent shape!). They fixed that for later years but the ABC and suspension geometry of the SL made it the winner. Both are "boats" once the road turns however.

2007+ SL55's received larger throttle body and a slightly smaller pulley from the factory stock, but prior to this their was no discernible difference between any of the 55k motors.

Even with the new 07-08 SL55 being rated at higher HP/Torque,, the E is still way lighter ..
+1 for the E
+1 for the E

I actually just took my dads 07 SL55 to the track, best time was 12.6XX @ 114.5 w/ 2.2 second 60 ft times. (all times are in this thread- https://mbworld.org/forums/sl55-amg-sl63-amg-sl65-amg-r230/257551-took-sl55-drag-strip.html ) The car has Michelin Pilot A/S tires though, and my launch technique could use some improvement. I'm thinking with some stickier tires and a better launch I could maybe get it into the 12.4's?? What do you guys think I could run in it with 60ft times below 2 seconds?
