Do you have the Pano roof? If so, my guess is that's the cause; mine does it as well. I did not have any issue with my E320 CDI with a standard roof & I'm fairly sure that's the only real structural difference between the two models.

My SA told me it was caused by the Pano roof and there was nothing they can do about it

I heard my 06 doing it as it was getting pulled out of HMS for some work.

Blue Monster told me that there was a service bulletin on it, so I complained to my service advisor, and they replaced some steering components. I havent been outside of the car yet, so I dont know if its still there.

edit: I just re-read hepost, I thought it was going on outside, not inside. Mine doesnt make noise on the inside

I've been trying to find a DIY to remove the headliner for this reason. I want to check the pano roof myself. The dealer had it tiwce for this issue and its rather annoying. AMGfan should be posting some pics of his headliner removed, so I can get an idea at what I need to do. I put felt pieces on the tabs for the mirror and dome light which made those quiet.

07 pano roof. Checked into the fix and just not worth the effort for a temp fix.

I have pano and only get some clicks in the roof when the cabin is really hot. Goes away when it cools down.
