oil consumption between changes?

Just wondering if anyone has to add any oil between changes and how often?

20K miles not one drop. At 13K miles I had a leak (drain plug) had both plugs replaced no leak.

BTW, FYI oil drain plugs (2) are a one time use item in the E55, they must be replaced once removed from pan.

crush washers on both oil pans were replaced. I run it very hard on weekends. Matt at house of imports says it is within the factory range. I am going to keep an eye on it and report back.

How much are you losing? Are you burning it or is it leaking? Trust me, I have researched and BOTH bolts are to be replaced, not just the washers.

do a search, plenty of posts and read the manual on this one. I burn a quart periodically. It's not unusual...i just forget the stats. If you're worried, mention it to the service advisor and they'll do a oil consumption test

Almost 70k on the odo and never added a drop. I do get an occasional puff of smoke if its sat for more than 3-4 days.

i topped off yesterday. gauge cluster says i needed to add 1 quart at next fill up. 2.5 quarts to reach maximum capacity. i have been running the car very hard and often lately. gonna check the plugs next to see signs of burnage. the tips looks pretty black. I plan to change oil every 4-5k.

Reviving an old thread here but this is my problem too. I have had my car about 4-5 months now and I have had to add about 4 qts of oil since I have bought it. I have put probably 5k miles on the car since I have had it. Is this normal to add this much oil to the car?

I don't see or smell any oil burning and I never see any leaks in the driveway. Car runs very strong too. Any suggestions?

It could be anything from clogged PCV valve to valve seals needing to be replaced and worse off is the rings. But, if you say the car runs hard I doubt it's the rings. Have you tried running a thicker weight oil?

I have friends with M's that say the cars drink oil too. But, they run like a champ. I wouldn't worry about it. It's very common on a lot of high hp cars.

I have always wondered about this, since I hear it a lot. But if that's the case, why isn't it consistent.

My E63 doesn't use any oil between changes. But I know another owner who uses a lot of oil. It's the same motor. We both drive similarly. The same with M owners I know. Some use oil, some don't. Same with Porsche. It seems to vary all over the place.

New 997.2 Porsches are varying a lot from specimen to specimen and PCNA responds only by giving a range of miles per quart. Same with MBUSA and BMWNA.

Just curious......

i bet a lot of it has to do with the break-in of the engine when its new. some people baby their cars while others drive the **** out of them... now it seems that neither way has been proven to work better than the other, but to me, running your engine hard through out the RPM range when it's at temperature would make more sense since you want your rings to seat properly

fwiw, I didn't run my motor hard at all until after around 1.5k miles were on it. But I did drive always with varying rpms and not on the freeway at a steady speed. I think that's what helps seats the rings well. I never got it passed around 4k rpm before break-in so I pretty much babied it. My motor didn't seem truly broken in until 10-11k miles. Plus up until that point I did go through a few quarts. I also changed out the factory fill oil at around 1k miles.

But now it uses no oil at all and runs really strong. No tappet noises or anything, either. I'm pretty confident the motor will outlast the car itself.

I don't get it either. Maybe, because each engine is hand built then dyno tested immediately. Could cause variation from motor to motor. My car burns a little oil but it's significantly faster then my buddies who doesn't. Every time he drives my car he says it feels stronger and sweeps through the rpms quicker then his e55. I'm satisfied with that.

Put 2 ltrs in last weekend to top it up. Mobil 1. 15,000 klms since last oil change. Car has 110,000 klms on the clock. Not sure if it was filled right up last service but I assume it was.
