Coolant Temperatures ?

What do your coolant temperature normally run at on the water temp guage? Mine have been getting to the 100 mark in the city lately - not sure why. On the highway they are down around 85.

Suggestions?

Typical Benz behavior.

Others will argue with me, but with all of the ones I've owned, new and old, I've noticed you only get maybe 7 "good" years out of the OEM benz radiator and fan clutch. After that, the temps will start rising to the 100c mark.

I pretty much consider the radiator and fan clutch to be routine maintenance items. Change these two things and your temps will be back down to normal.

The fan is electric for one.

Mine stayed at 100 almost contantly since I bought in June until I replaced the intercooler pump now it is at 90 constant.

I'd wait and see since it may just be the weather? Mine sat at 80 ALL the time when we just put in the added HE and big pump. It is back to 90 now that the big pump is separate.

Its 50* outside in Philly now. . .

I ordered the C3 heat exchanger, hopefully it will get here by the weekend. It seemed like mine sat 1 line above 80 after the pump install and now it's being weird....

Should I separate the circuits?

90 to 100c
or around 200F

The only way to bring down coolant temp is through modified T stat and let the fan start sooner.

The lowest you can drop is around 160 or so.. so a modified T-stat of 180 probably the way to go.

don't mix the HE and Pump with your radiator and fan.. 2 very different systems that share 1 reservoir.

-------
When we add a bigger HE and better pump, we essentially only solve 1/2 the problem.. since we are not addressing the main problem.. engine coolant temp.

even adding Water Wetter, more vents, taking the engine cover, heat rap, ect.. will not help.. since the engine will still warm up the water to the set temp.

If you plan to mod, yes. Even if not, cooling is the best mod to give top end.

this should answer whether i will mod or not question . . .

power difference when i got vs when i sold it

yeah i'm gonna mod. i already did evospsort phenolic spacers, k&n air filters, secondary cats removed and my Code3 heat exchanger should be here any day. before i get pulley and tune i want to see what i can get out of it on stock boost level and stock ecu and make sure the car is running well.

Get cooling and separate the systems. Make a custom setup. it will be cheap, fun, and effective.

i got the pump and the heat exchanger already. what else do i need to split the circuits? heater hose and a reservoir?

any ideas on my rising coolant temps while slow driving? i am going to try bleeding the coolant again.

PM'd you, but getting hot while sitting in traffic is normal to some extent. Since you plan to upgrade, do that and if parts fail replace them.

Jangy,

Are you insinuating to just buy a bigger HE and then additionally just buy a reservoir and a few hose lines which would = a custom setup.

I'm still waiting for VRP to release pricing on their new and improved set-up. Have you been data logging and if so, is your car recovering well at WOT and how high are your IAT getting at WOT compared to an stock or old setup.

thx

I just got the code 3 exchanger Johnson cm30 and will be getting the -10mod. Now should I seperate the system and is there a how to on this? Also do you reccomend the 160tstat and how much are these?
Justin

Almost. I am saying that you can keep your current HE and add a piece on to increase HE. Once you split systems, you will need to add a reservoir for the SC coolant. I found a 1.5 gallon one that fits on top of the aluminum bumper but you can honestly use anything. I know many use a spare power steering fluid reservoir but I need the added capacity. Finally, add the daddy Davies pump that I love and how is it not a custom setup?

Mine can't be new or improved, so I assume it is not what VRP would sell. But the recovery was the most noticed. Before, I would peak at about 160 and it would stay there pretty steadily. After the VRP cooling kit, the peak dropped by 20 - 40 degrees and recovered VERY fast. My focus now is on the peak. I took the airbox out last week and just that has helped by another 10 degrees. I assume it is because the heat can escape better from the manifold and engine top now, so i will go ahead with my experiment to see if I can lay something inline accross the top to help pull the heat.
