E63 Front Brakes - how much should I pay?

I just took my 07 E63 in for Service B at 32K miles and the dealership called and reported that I need new front brake pads. As a result, they are stating the rotors need to be replaced also. The estimate for the whole job is $2,750, installed. Is this what I should expect to pay?

absolutely not...that is ridiculous. you can get new front pads for about $200 and new front rotors for less than $600. I would suggest finding a local shop that can do it for much cheaper or consider doing it yourself as it is a very straightforward job.

I am being told the E55 and E63 have different brakes and the E63 uses Brembo rotors that cost a lot more. Regardless, another ATL dealer has just quoted me $2,200 and I am waiting to hear from an independent shop.

They are the same. For the money you're being quoted you can upgrade to EvoSport 2 piece rotors and performance pads.

Actually the e63 front rotors are roughly $750- 1000 each, as they are the 2 piece design, pair them with the cost of pads and the $2700 is pretty fair coming from a dealership. You can of course get it done cheaper by an independent, we would charge closer to $2100-2200 for the front brake change, as we get all mb components from the dealer.

Also someone mentioned the evosport rotors, the fronts will work, however I'm not completely sure that the rears will work.

If your brakes are low, have them measure the rotor thickness to see if they actually do in fact need to be replaced.

At 32k miles I would definitely measure the rotors first. Most likely they aren't worn out yet.

$10 says the E55 rotors will fit on the E63 and you won't know the difference in every day drivnig.

I'd seriously question the need for brakes. My car has lived in city stop and go driving, I've got 35k now and my front brakes aren't even close to needing a service.

The e63 front rotors are 2 piece and very expensive. they are also very heavy. If you are going to replace them, I suggest going with the EVOsport ones. I do not know if they claim them for the E63, but it is worth a test fit if not. The rears will work without issues.

As an alternative, you can have the rotors turned IF they are still within specs. Many dealerships do not turn rotors and replace them instead.

since they are not selling cars.. they need to make money in the service dept.

I would buy OEM pads for your car and take the pads to a shop to install your pads.

Unless your rotors are warped or really worn.. no need to change.

If you really want to go the extra mile.. have a Autozone/Kragen or some big brand store "turn" the rotors or shave them slightly..

they usually run from $8 to 15 bucks a piece.

IF you really want to save money.. search this forum for a recent thread about brakes.. plenty of ways to buy parts on line.

I have to say.. thank God I don't have those multi piece rotors..

Can't really turn a two piece rotor since they float on bobbins

good question... dunno.

I doubt you need new rotors at 37k miles.. and sounds like this is the first time he has changed his pads.

Or else this thread would no exist.

I would say.. just do the pads.

My OEM E55 rotors were toast after 10k miles and the EVOsport front rotors lasted about 7K. It all depends on how you use them.

1. You shouldn't turn (machine) cross drilled rotors.

2. You should ALWAYS check minimum thickness, and if you're still within spec, there is no need to replace your rotors pre-maturely

3. Since it's essentially a brembo rotor, you should be able to find replacement friction rings and replace them using the original rotor hats for the 2-piece E63 rotors.

4. I have no real way of knowing, but I'm willing to bet the 1 piece E55 rotor will be a direct replacement for the 2-piece E63 rotor and will be MUCH MUCH cheaper. Again, unless you are planning to track the car, there shouldnt' be any difference day to day.
