Gutting E55 mufflers, exactly how much and what...?

Opened up my E55 mufflers over the weekend and removed as much of the gray-ish packing and white fiberglass pipe wraps as I could reach. I cut into the outer side of each muffler, but high enough so that when mounted back into their original position, the cuts/welds aren't visible, basically being blocked by the rear quarter panels... I took out alot of "stuff" and was concerned that I might have taken out too much and that the exhaust would sound like no mufflers at all... After firing it up and test driving it, I'm assuming I did not get all that needs to be removed because the exhaust note didn't change much at all... I figure I need to cut into the top of the mufflers and remove more fiberglass wrap or do something else but not sure at this point... Anyone here every actually done it or witnessed it done and know exactly what I might have missed...? I'm starting to think the 5.0 liter engine just can't push enough exhaust to make this E55 exhaust sound right.

You need to cut out the baffles so that the mufflers are a straight thru design. The packing is just one part of the process.

Need something to hang the tips off, no... I was surprised just how much "stuff" was inside the mufflers... A gray-ish steel-wool-looking material loosely stuffed in there. Then all the perforated pipes had a white Fiberglass wrap around them. One pipe had a rusty colored thin wire wrap around it... Guess I'm gonna' go back in and figure out what the baffles look like and cut them too... Stay tuned...

go to a local muffler shop and get rid of your resonators as well because you will never get any really good sound unless you do so

Take all of the packing out and bypass the S-turn inside.

How much worse is the drone at cruise speed if you remove the resonators?

removing the resonator will not cause any drone at all.

Been there, done that... I had the stock resonator replaced with an x-pipe last week when I installed the E55 system... I'll try to get some pics and definately will get a sound clip or 2 when it's all said and done... Hoping to get to it this weekend... The other thing that will be interesting is how much different mine will sound than psuball1's car because remember mine is an E500 5 litre and his is an E55 5.5 litre SC'd car... I'm assuming his is pushing a considerable amount more exhaust volume than mine does...

On my E500 with the recently installed E55 exhaust, there is NO drone at all at idle or at cruising speed... NONE... At 1800 - 2000 RPM it is quiet inside the car and there is really more wind and tire noise than anyhthing related to exhaust sounds...

Thanks for feedback. That's the answer I was hoping for. My next step is to remove sec. cats and resonator, then gut the mufflers myself.

Was there much difference when you removed sec cats and resonators and had the mufflers stock, or did you do everything at once?

I went from stock E500 to Magnaflows, then bought E55 system and had it installed with X-pipe, then gutted E55 Muffs... Magnaflows didn't give me the sound I wanted. E55 exhaust with resonator replaced with x-pipe wasn't really much better than stock, so gutted the E55 muffs. But, I didn't gut them correctly only having removed the steel wool packing and fiberglass wraps from the baffles... Sound improved very slightly but still not what I'm looking for. Next plan is to go back into E55 muffs and cut the baffles. Several here have done it, most notibly a member named psuball1 ... You can find his sound clips if you search the E55 Forum... If completely gutting the E55 muffs doesn't cut it, I think my next choice would be RENNTECH Muffs as they sound awesome... I still have my primary and 2nd-ary Cats so have nothing to offer on that mod...

With 4 cats, you may never get the sound you are looking for, even if mufflers are removed. Your working on the wrong end of the car .. Put a set of Long tubes or mid tube headers on, with one set of RACE cats and then you will start getting some real sound. Plus , you will make nice power. Playing with exh. system from mid car back does very little for power and sound options..
