Two California Highway Patrol Officers were conducting speeding enforcement on I-15, just north of the Marine Corps Air Station at Miramar . One of the officers was using a hand held radar device to check speeding vehicles approaching the crest of a hill. The officers were suddenly surprised when the radar gun began reading 300 miles per hour. The officer attempted to reset the radar gun, but it would not reset and then turned off.

Just then a deafening roar over the treetops revealed that the radar had in fact locked on to a USMC F/A-18 Hornet (Northrop Grumman aircraft) which was engaged in a low flying exercise near the location.





Back at the CHP Headquarters the Patrol Captain fired off a complaint to the USMC Base Commander. The reply came back in true USMC style:

Thank you for your letter. We can now complete the file on this incident.

You may be interested to know that the tactical computer in the Hornet had detected the presence of, and subsequently locked on to your hostile radar equipment and automatically sent a jamming signal back to it, which is why it shut down.

Furthermore, an Air-to-Ground missile aboard the fully armed aircraft had also automatically locked on to your equipment location.

Fortunately, the Marine Pilot flying the Hornet recognized the situation for what it was, quickly responded to the missile system alert status and was able to override the automated defense system before the missile was launched to destroy the hostile radar position.




The pilot also suggests you cover your mouths when cussing at them, since the video systems on these jets are very high tech.

Sergeant Johnson, the officer holding the radar gun, should get his dentist to check his left rear molar. It appears the filling is loose. Also, the snap is broken on his holster.

It's pretty sad that people who became cops are stuck doing that.

I'm pretty sure that the cops who do it hate doing it.

Funny that I come across you saying that because I said the same exact thing today while I was driving on route 80 watching them sit there holding their radar guns. Very very sad that they get paid out of our money to take our money when we speed.

story of the day for sure. funny little read. In todays world you never know if something bad is happening know matter where it is. Just wonder if they were really flying around with live rounds during training. sometimes they do sometimes they dont.

heard this story a couple of years ago and didn't believe it then either. it is a good read though!

i wouldn't mind a discussion on real radar jamming equipment...now that's some fun stuff. to watch cops bang their radar guns on the tanks of their motorcycles because it's not working is about the funniest thing i've ever seen!!!

Best story I ever read was in a book about the blue angles. The train company pissed off on of the pilots somehow, so at night when the train was going down the tracks the conductor saw what he thought was a train coming at him at high speed. The conductor threw the emergency brake and flatspotted all the wheels on the train. The other train seemed to magically dissappear.

Cops effin' suck. Especially lately. After Florida passed that property tax rollback a few months ago, the counties and cities really started hurting for money, so now they're parking porkers behind every bush and bridge with radar guns. It's getting ridiculous...almost everybody I know has gotten a ticket in the last few weeks. I even got pulled over the other day for not wearing my seatbelt, that'll be $94 please...
