Anyone here drive a GTR? or have opinions?
I did not do alot of mods actually, just the basic ECU, mid pipes and exhaust. I never even launched my car once in the 10 months I had the car but still I got a transmission problem because I didn't watch my transmission oil temperature on the circuit. I was watching my engine oil and water temperatures but forgot to watch the transmission temps, and by the time the warning came up, it was too late - I blew a clutch sensor. If that's not enough, Nissan go not sell the sensor and I had to order in a WHOLE new gearbox! Fortunately I am going to claim this under warranty.
Alot of my friends also experienced all sorts of warning lights and other problems. Some could not even start their car for no reason and had to replace some sort of control unit. The car is way too sensitive IMO ... For example if you don't change your oil often enough, if you don't use the right oil, if you don't follow the right procedure while changing the transmission oil on the hoist, if you don't re-align the clutch packs after every 5000kms ... etc, etc ...
Even Porsche owners are complaining that the maintenence is ridiculous!
I'm not trying to slag the car, but just to give you an insider's prespective and the preventative mantainence required.

The only problem is the rareness or lack there of....Cant argue that. Not to mention that vette guys are a 'different' breed.
We all love the same cars and hate the same cars for EXACTLY the same reasons.
Z06/ZR1---VERY FAST,great price, easy to make faster, relieble......horrible interior, WAAAY to common, GM cache, no e-gear
SL65--FAST, Beautiful,rare........too heavy...too much $$$$
F430---Sex appeal, engine, handling.......not THAT fast, too$$ for a Daily driver, $$ to mod
Lambo--see F430
DB9--GORGEOUS RARE CAR, classy.............not fast...heavy...hard to mod
GTR--Very Rare, Fast, Great handling, Easy to mod, nice price point.........LOTS OF WARRENTY issues=questionable reliability, attracts too much negitive attension, Doesnt have the BRAND appeal of the others.
Life is about compromises -- which are you willing to give up?? Personally, I wouldnt want a GTR.....I couldnt give up that V10 sound......and this is soo tempting..
I'm not doubting there are dealerships asking $25-$50K OVER msrp...but we all know they are not going to get it. If they were still a hot item they would all be gobbled up by now. It's no different than the Black Series market was, in Sept. of 2007-Jan. of 2008 they were getting MSRP and well above, by January they were fetching no higher than MSRP and by late March they were going for $5-10k under MSRP, now they are going for $30k under MSRP. I own and buy a lot of cars, the ZR1 is really nothing special, it's still just a Corvette...Same cheap leather, same cheap hollow plastic dash board and stil the same poor Corvette fit and finish. If it was something special I would have held on to mine for more than 3 days, I really did not need the $22k that badly.

Read the last sentence. I knew I never faulted when I said GM can build a durable engine (even if they don't know what interiors are).
I was at a RENNtech event last night and spoke with Brooks (Fiske). As you probably know he had a RENNtech tuned E55 and is a big enthusiast as we are. He absolutely loves his GTR!!! He has no regrets and told me that tuning the GTR is so cheap and easy. I say definitely go for it

Thanks Larry my good friend, long time no chat. And yes I dont take Brooks word lightly nor anyone elses opinion here. I got a chance to stretch the legs on the M6 yesterday and boy does that car move (Im modded light to medium I guess).
I went to the Chevy store but they didnt have a used Z06 to try out and I didnt want to drive a new one and put miles on it (respect to the dealer).
But, I did go next door and there was a GTR there at the Nissan store. They let me test drive it and while test drives are not long I got some initial impressions:
The fit and finish on the black is ok but the silver in the showroom was better. The interior was not bad for Nissan and I really didnt get a chance to play with the NAV. The seats were fine.
Performancewise, its slower than my modded TT by a bit but that is to be expected. Its acceleration is very linear, I didnt really feel the gear shifts and there was minimal turbo lag- better than the TT. It has good dig "get up and go" but was slighly deficient IMHO at higher rolling speeds ie mashing it at 65mph and running to 120mph. The car only had 5 miles on it when I drove it and I didnt have the R buttons on at first. I have no idea what all those things were and the GM wasnt sure either. The handling was superb- planted at all speeds and I even pressed it in high speed bank turns and had no fear. The brake feel was super tight, better than TT in fact from initial impressions. Ill have to drive it again since the first time there is an adrenaline effect.
Overall its an interesting car and Im sure with all the correct setups turned on, the stock car would be even better. If I mod it then I know it will be a monster. I dont think my opinion of the car swayed one way or the other, its still a consideration.
At the Chevy store, they had a ZR1 on the floor and all I can say is damnnnnn amazing and even in yellow!!! No test drive allowed
