Two Heat Exchangers

So I was bored yesterday and walked in the garage. I started eyeing the stock HE just sitting on the self not doing anything, so I figured I would put it to work. I put it underneath the front bumper and it amazingly clears it with no issues. I think that it holds the same amount of coolant that adding a BMW powersteering resovuar would, plus it cools it...

After the bleeding the system (which took forever!!!), I decided to take it for a ride. The results are amazing!!!! The temps fall from 4 bars over 80 to two bars over 80 in less then 30 sec!!!!

If you have your stock HE laying around try it, it costs $10 in hose and clamps and makes a huge difference!!

Here is a pic of what I am talking about...

What do you think???

Your worst nightmare...
That is very creative and an amazing idea. I am sure many will benefit from this. Extra cooling never hurts in these cars...

Very "cool" idea!!...

The only problem that I see is that you will have to be EXTREMELLY carefull not to run the car into something that can only SEE close that OE HE, because if it touch it just a very small touch....well...you probably know the rest if that can happen.

Besides that... It is good to spend our relaxing time thinking in DIY upgrades like this.

Keep it thinking!

I think with the position of that h/e you are begging to puncture a hole in that unit, have your coolant leak all over (possibly without you knowing), and blow up your engine

Interesting idea though...

No doubt that’s a lot of cooling. Looks vulnerable though.

i know of an E55 a upgraded HE in series with the stock HE. The stock HE is in the stock location with the upgraded HE in front of it. Its shoehorned in there but it fits. He also has the coolant/res tank in trunk separated...great setup...

That's ok, he's got plenty of coat hangers and baling wire to fix anything!

Sorry Aleks

Good idea. Now I presume you are not using the belly pan.
If the belly pan is modified to protect and still allow air to flow to the stock heat exchanger this will be a good upgrade.
Nice work again

Would this setup help if you have a stock heat exchanger.

The angle of the photograph may be deceiving - but judging by aleksandar1099's sig pic, he has a CF front lip, correct? It looks like the OEM HE hangs down ~1 inch LOWER than the CF lip... is that accurate, or is it an optical illusion from the angle of the pic?

If that's the case, I agree w/ others... one wrong crunch on a speed bump or piece of debris, and you'll be losing coolant in a hurry Props for the ingenuity, but I'm not sure this is a safe DIY set-up to run - YMMV.

My friend did that too but with 2 same sized heat exchangers one in front of the other, won't the front one be totally blocking the air from the second one?

What do you think???
So you changed the Stock HE for an upgraded LET HE replacement, then added the stock one back on under the motor in series with CM30 pump?

That's it?!?! Would a CM90 pump make a bigger difference with increased volume? Someone's gotta have a creative way to protect the HE in this setup...

Anyone know how many passes the coolant makes in a stock HE and an aftermarket one? 2 passes? 4 passes?

bars

You should put thin bars across the unity going from front to back, so they can slide. Don't attach the bars to the unit, attach them to something else that will hold during the hit. Once you have hit once, it will probably **** on these bars... but they will be cheap, so replace them. I would also put a bar that connects the 4 bars, on the inside, as to not touch on the sled effect, just before and after the heat exchanger.

Now the question is where do you attach those bars? Weld them to 'Happiness' and use a good metal like 'hope' LOL

Green is HE, because it costs money - heh

As thin as these bars that attach to the pipes, just a little insurance, w/o compromising.

Just a random idea

The intercooler clears the bottom of the car flush to the carbon fiber lip....

I think I am going to split the circut, because it is still tied together with the cooling system.

intelligic- I like the idea of the cage around it! I might have to try to do something like that!

its a wht e55 here in south fla. Im not sure if hes on the forums or not, but his friend is JBMFCAR is his screen name. Its seems to work pretty good. As far as the front HE blocking the air flow to the rear...probably to some extent, but it should get decnt flow. Many high performance cars have huge intercoolers in front of the radiators...the radiators get decreased, but adequate airflow at speed...probably the same situation with two HE...
