my 03 e55 is stock. I had a look at the intake at the front behind the grill.
Can i take some of the plastic off so it can suck in more air more easy ? can them plastic pieces just un clip? i dont want to brake them or cut them off. Ill only take them off if they un clip.

Will it be ok if i take them off ?

There are tons of threads on this. Basically, yes, you can cut those fins off. There is a concern of water getting in the intake, but as of now, no one who has cut them off has experienced any water getting in.

You can also get the driver side intake tubing/snorkel from a sl55 it does not have the narrow constriction. It is less than 20 bucks at the dealership.

The driver side one has a bottle neck. The sl one has the same diameter throughout.

so if i get the sl 55 drivers side then my driver and my other side will then match ?? also is there any gain ?? would the sl 55 one come with all the fins and stuff ?

The drivers side intake tube is a restriction however there is also a restriction at the opening on the side of the radiator. The SL55 intake tube does not address the issue of the tiny opening at the side of the radiator.

I don't have one in front of me so I cannot say for sure, but I think the inlet size on the SL55 intake tube does not match up with the inlet size on the E55 (at the side of the radiator).

I might just look for after market tubes. Does any one make any thing like the VRP carbon fiber air tubes But not made out of carbon maybe plastic or fiber glass. So they are a lot cheaper.I am from Australia and are money has gone down the toilet. It will cost me $1,040 bucks and then i have to pay to get it sent here just for 2 pipes. I know they are carbon and good carbon is not cheap but thats the thing. If you know any one who makes some thing like the vrp intake tubes out of plastic or fiber class please any one let me know they must be alot cheaper i hope lol .

To match the sl tubes to the opening on the radiator all you have to do is use a heat gun to match the size of the stock 55 tubing. It takes 10 mins to do.
About gains they way I see it is that doing this cannot hurt.

actually, you want to (carefully) take the heat gun to the restricted radiator pass and match IT to the new sl tube.

I dont see much gain coming from just larger air snorkels alone. If you want to stick with a budget, you could probably get better results by adding the ram air scoops with stock/sl55 snorkels and aftermarket air filters. Just my 2 cents.
