OT, Where is the 500 SEC AMG section?
Is there a 500 SEC section on this forum? I looked but did not see one
An opportunity has presented itself for me to pick up a mint condition 1985 SEC 500 AMG, with less than 15k original miles for $2500.00. A neigbor of mine sisters husband passed away and was somewhat of a collector and had a pretty nice stable, but most of the good stuff got gobbled up quick...and cheap, like a mint red 86 911 turbo with low miles for $10k and a Buick Grand National for $3000, an 86 Corvette pace car went for $3000. The widow just wants to get rid of the cars, I wish I had known a week earlier I would have cut her a check for everything in the garage and had a party on e-bay
I am mulling over the idea to pick this car up, I googled it and did not find much about it. I assume it is somewht collectible or desirable based on the other cars this guy owned, none of them were super exotic, but definetly enthusiast type cars. What did an AMG consist of back then? were the engines tuned or was it just suspension and body kit stuff? What is this car worth? It is black/black, lots of black, no chrome, black grille, black everything, I have never seen one before but it actually is kind of a cool looking car, except the 16 inch wheels look funny on such a large car.

If you don't buy it at that price, shoot me PM with the seller's info if/when you decide to take a pass, because I might pick it up. I have a real soft spot for the older MB's, especially the W126 style. Beautiful cars.

The best W-126C AMG will have a 6 liter motor and a wide body. collector grade.
At that time AMGs were ala cart. A 500 SEC AMG is not collector grade, but worth $2.5k

A 560SEC with the Lorinser package...a car of my teen age dreams way back when.
Had built a 1/24 Tamiya scale model of the car, still a thing of beauty in my mind's eye.

The coolest thing about that car is that it was done by AMG when they were just a standalone tuning house. My dad used to have 500SEC. He bought it in Germany and had AMG work their magic on it then brought it into the states as a grey market car. They did an aero kit and some engine work....can't remember exactly what was done, but the car would run 160mph all day long and never skip a beat. I'll see if I have some old photos of it laying around...it was a really cool car. I used to have a photo of the dash at speed. There were 4 of us in it on our way to Grand Lake in Oklahoma to do some diving. We had the trunk FULL of scuba equipment, tanks etc....the photo showed the speedo PEGGED at 160mph
I'll see if I can dig it up....
Jim - if you don't buy it I'd love a shot at it and would pay for it sight unseen. Let me know pls.

Thanks, not sure how I missed that, I scanned the list a couple times. I am going to go drive the car today and most likely will have cash in hand. I will post up some pics. I am going to post some questions on Private Lounge to get more info on exactly what an AMG consisted of back then, if I am going to own it I might as well be educated about it.

There are tons of versions of the AMG coupe. Some are rare and special others are just slightly different than stock. If this is a 6.0L quad cam V8 SEC Hammer its worth all the 25k. If it is just a 500SEC with a body kit, interior bits and maybe some exhaust work its not a great buy. There were also 6.0L single over head cam versions and 5.6L versions etc.
I would figure out what you are looking at before writing the check. Sure the miles are low but 25k is pretty steep. It is likely worth 25k but its hardly a steal at that price unless it is the ultra rare AMG 4 cam head 6.0L motor vehicle (the hammer but in an SEC).

BTW, crazy prices for those other vehicles as well... some people got an absolute STEAL from that estate sale.

If you really want to know whether the car's got legit AMG mods take some pics and post them up in the W126 section of B#E#N#Z#W#O#R#L#D. No offense to any other forums, but as far as the 126 models are concerned, the members over there are experts in picking apart the real from the clone when it comes to old school AMG 126's. The VIN would also be useful in order to establish the original options the car came with - there's a Russian site through which you can run the VIN to produce an "options list."
Back then, AMG was an aftermarket tuner.
One thing's for sure though, 15K original miles may sound good, but those cars like to be driven - sitting in a garage = drying, rotting and cracking. What sounds like a steal may turn out to be a money pit by the time you get it running right, or running at all.
Good luck.

Nahhh.... that would violate the de-facto TOU (FacTOU) sanctioned on this forum which clearly requires that once you've asked me to post pics of something I've implied that I possess, a third forum member must then call my honesty into question by posting a reply that calls me a fraud. At that point, the FacTOU would require me to "man-up" by concocting the most unreasonable and non-benz related retort to the challenge. My reply would need to consist of either a bet of egotistical proportions, or a requirement that the challenger agree to a "permaban" if it turned out that I wasn't a lying attention-seeker after all. Depending on the content of the FacTOU at the particular moment of posting, I might be allowed to act out in ways that would result in probation for other members.... or, I might be banned. It's hard to know.

I love 126's. 15K Miles is amazing, but it can actually end up working against you as that is a lot of sitting still for a loooong time.
If that thing runs perfect and is really AMG anything, I'd give her the cash and run.

I actually passed on the car because when I went to look at it and drive it I brought one of my employees who is one of my truck mechanics/body guy/painter with me to look at it, when he saw it he fell in love with it. He is a young guy and has fallen on very tough times. I actually did purchase the car and sold it to him for what I paid and gave him an interest free loan which he has to pay back $200.00 per month over the next 12 months or so.
I will have him get a username on MBW and post up some pics. The car is very clean, although I would not call it mint,as it was originally described to me. Their is a small dent on the center hood which removed a dot of paint about the size of a penny like something dropped on it(BTW, is the hood aluminum, no rust on the dent???), a couple very small door dings on the passanger door and the interior leather on the top of the rear seats facing the rear window is a little sun damaged. Besides that it is a clean car and runs great.
I have a paint facility in my shop and I have agreed to let him work on the car after hours. He is going to repaint the entire car in the original factory black and put on some 18" AMG replica wheels that look period specific and paint the center black with a brused lip and tint the window. He has also located an aftermarket exhaust and a set of H&R springs that should give the car an even sportier stance. Should be perfect when it's done, and I'm sure he will drive it to some of the local events this summer so you guys can check it out.
