The last time there were several customers standing around the car they all heard it.
At that point the service advisor had to step up.
They will put the lifters in no Tuesday. I hope that is the problem will report back next week.[/quote]
Hi. Has the dealer replaced your lifters yet? and if so did the sound went away? how long did you have to leave your car there?

Dealerships can try and swap out the bucket tappets but it just comes back.
I have had MB replace motors over knocking pistons etc but the sounds never went away. The M119 in early forms had piston slap and so did my C36. Both had 2 motors installed and every time it never went away! So with that MB has learned some things dont ever get resolved and well its cheaper to just say so up front rather than replace parts until you go broke.
The new MB warranty line is.... that is normal. Normal oil consumption, normal knocking sounds, normal ball joint play, normal soft bushings etc.
If a tech finds your car has a failed bushing or an oil leak they cant by rule fix it or add a line to the ticket. They MUST wait for you to claim there is an issue. So really MB has tied the dealerships back at ever helping you keep the car maintained. If it is a true safety issue the shop foreman must approve the repair and add the line to the ticket.
Oh and seeping cam covers or front covers are not really repaired. The repair is only authorized IF the oil is actually dripping off the block. If not they wash it off and ship it!
Got to love MB!

Guys, don't be too quick to pass it off as normal, noise is the first indicator of a problem.
Here is a good read on the 63 valve train.

No Knock
When I start mine the engine is slightly louder at idle but settles down within 20 seconds. I don't drive it every day and it sits for 5 days sometimes. 27,700 miles on it. Don't hear a ticking sound at all, warm or cold. It did concern me at first being loud when first started but I'm putting my faith in what the dealer says as well.

I have the same problem, the car is only driven a few times a week.
At idle I can hear, knock.knock.knock.knock........
Guess I will have the dealer take a look at it.

OT here, but in reference to engine noise, do these motors have a sorta high pitch whine to them? It's not like an E55, but more like just a vacuum or whine noise that you can hear while in a garage or when driving slowly in stop and go situations. It varies with rpms.
I went to two dealers; the first said it was "normal" and called it a motor pump sound(?) That was MB BH. At the second dealer, the shop foreman listened and heard it. He went over to a C63 and it kinda had the same sound. That was at W.I. Simonson.
It just sounds kinda whiney. I ran a CarFax on the car (I bought it new with 18 miles on it) and noticed right after delivery from the VPC, the dealer had replaced the drive belt tensioner pulley at 7 miles (MB South Bay.)
