EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUPTION. PLEASE HELP
Hi guys. By 2005 E55 just hit 40,000 miles and still runs extremely stong just like when she was new. But I have one problem.
At around 30k miles it started burning oil and is currently burning 1 quart every 1500 miles. The dealer says its normal and not to worry but to me it seems extremely excessive. Can anyone give any advice on this topic.
What is causing the lose of oil?
What can it damage?
Can it be fixed or how is it fixed?
Ect.
Thanks

Dealer is 100% wrong, Get a compression test ASAP!
Are you still under warranty?
Don't neglect it it will get worse.

I'd do this. If youve got fried piston rings then you'll be seeing blowby and you'll most likely fail a leakdown test.
Another option may be to simply change out your PCV and see if it helps any. Also, try pulling your plugs and see if there is any oil present.
Good luck.

The only way to get an exact reading is to track how many miles you've driven since the last change, drain the oil entirely, measure how much came out, and do the math.

For as long as I've owned an MB, I never relied on the engine computer to tell me to change the oil...I would still check it manually via dipstick if I had to check.

Neither...After having gone through a blown engine already, I've been pretty paranoid so I get all my oil changes after 3K mile durations. Probably overkill but I tend to hang on to cars for a long time so its worth it to me for peace of mind...In addition, it gives my tech a chance to do a once over under the car and under the hood every 4-6 months while he does the oil change.

Great points but that oil consumption is not that bad at all. If you drive quickly it burns even more oil. Its normal. If you had a M156 it would eat even MORE oil.

i just made an appointment for an independent benz shop all though the car is under warranty. They are gonna do a leak down test and compression test and check for oil leaks just to be safe. Do you think i should have them inspect the spark plugs and check for signs of oil in cylinder?
I spoke to them and they said one main concern about burning that much oil is premature cat failure.
Ive never seen it blow smoke but the exhuast tips and rear diffuser just get coverd in what looks like soot from a chimney.

well to do a compression or leakdown at least one plug per cylinder will have to come out, so any good shop should look at them anyway.
they may use a boroscope to check for excessive carbon build up but I think the compression and leakdown tests will be far more telling than a visual inspection.

I had my doubts before. So, I had my oil level confirmed with dip stick and factory oil level sensor. It was spot on with the gauge cluster read.

That is where the optional dipstick is located. If pulled out, just may find a dip stick cap and no dip stick. That's a $ 200.00 dealer option if you want the old fashion dip stick to read.
