exhaust - muffler only - sound?

Im currently working on CF mods for my new e55 (first) but the lack of aural pleasure, so to speak, is something which needs addressing - considering my last toy was a 67 Camaro / 383 Stroker / loud as hell....but sweet sweet v8 roar. Will a couple of a/market mufflers make much difference to the sound - ie louder? From a couple of calls seem to be a pretty quick and cheap mod. tnx

Mufflers will definitely change the sound of the car significantly. You might lose a tad bit of power but you will notice a HUGE difference in sound.

If you want a smaller change, I suggest you cut out yer resonators and yer secondary cats.

What if you don't want to cut or modify your stock system or pipes? Are there any affordable muffler options to increase sound?

It seems like less fab work to just slap some mufflers on.

Only "affordable" mufflers are going to be either borla or magnaflow that I know of. The Eisenmann and Meisterschaft exhausts are both just the mufflers and they cost a pretty penny.

^Yeah, thats what I've heard. Thinking of just going with a pair of magnaflows and not doing anything else to the exhaust.

I want more growl but nothing too loud. Think I can get that with a pair of magnaflows? Or will it be too loud?

I used to have a resonator delete and borla race mufflers. Definitely gave the car some sound. But it did drone a tad bit inside. I have a clip on my computer somewhere. Most of the socal guys have heard it. Now I'm back to stock mufflers with resonator and a pair of cats deleted.

^I've been doing some searching and I think I came across your video. Sounded nice. I would of course retain my resonators so that should help with any potential drone.

What brand muffler do you recommend (among the "cheap" ones, that is)? E.g. borla, magnaflow, etc.

If you wanted the "cheap" route, I would suggest the borla race mufflers. Only reason is cause I ran with it for some time and I liked the way it sounded. Haven't had any experience with the magnaflows.

I hope the owners of the cars don't mind me posting their vids...If they do, please pm me and I will edit the post.

Thanks. I came across MJ's video and think his setup sounds great. I may go with magnaflows.

Now I just need to find a reputable shop in LA/OC. LMK if you have any recommendations and THANKS for all your input.

If yer near LA, may I suggest AAA Performance Exhaust

2600 S La Cienega Blvd
Los Angeles, CA 90034
(310) 839-2443
http://www.aaaexhaust.com/

Go there and ask for Pepe. He has done my setup in the past and has done many other's in this forum. He's very good.

If yer near OC, may I suggest Ace Mufflers

7271 Westminster Blvd
Westminster, CA 92683
(714) 892-1328

It's a small family owned shop, but they do excellent werk. They have done my current set up.

Just FYI in case you haven't considered it. Replacing the mufflers is fab work. Having said that, ANY muffler within acceptable dimensions will work, because a fab job is a fab job. So you're not necessarily limited to just one or two mufflers. Take your pic; anything out there that has the right size will work.

I like the AMG mufflers when gutted better than cheap mufflers. Why not just have them cleaned out?

I don't know jangy, maybe its just me, but I haven't really cared for the sound of the gutted mufflers.

It sounds a bit more raspy and not as "clean" IMHO.

Hmm never throught of this (obvious) option. Before I turned to 4 wheels I strictly got my kicks out of 2 wheels - there's still nothing like lighting the wick on a turbo'd Suzuki Hayabusa - 9 second 1/4's anyone..., anyway I pulled the guts out of the pipes on a Honda VTR 1000 of mine which made it sound better than the same bike with $2000 Yoshimura pipes.

Are there any utube's of this mod only? - I would look at work but utube is blocked (and I'm the boss - go figure)

I agree. I don't much care for the sound either. Raspy is the word.

Not as clean as what? That is the key. I haven't found many "cheap" mufflers on a benz that sound good. I only choose the gutted OEMs over the magnaflows, etc. because of price.

Mine aren't gutted. i like the quiet look....stealth...

Do a search and you will find nice pictures and descriptions from just a few months back. You basically cut the top off (so it is not seen when put back. Then you pull out the fiberglass. If you really want it raspy, then go in and remove the baffles as well.

With fiberglass and baffles removed, I agree it is raspy. I guess I am confused on what you guys do like, since a magnaflow makes it sound like a truck.

Damn you jangy, that is my only reservation. I keep going back and forth on whether the magnaflows sound like a chevy truck!!!

Just when I decided to go with it, you get me questioning whether I want my MB to sound like a truck.

Since its relatively inexpensive, I think I may get it done and if I don't like it I can always switch back.

IMO, The AMG stock muffler has the potential to sound nice. Knowing that MB uses a few types of mufflers in the AMG line up the sound will vary. That being said... My C55 has 300 cell random technology hiflow cats into an xpipe and then back to the mufflers. I think it makes for a nice tone. It has some drone, but that a trade off you have to be willing to take

The problem I'm running into now is my mufflers are now a point of restriction. They just dont have that strait through design that I want now that im in the 450whp 530wtq range.

I haven't heard many, but the magnaflow mufflers on an AMG dont give it the tone "I" would want in my AMG. However You tube video's we all know never really sound like the real thing.

If the sound is all you are after then your standard res-delete and 2nd cat delete should get you in the ball park. The rest is up to you to refine the sound your after and then balance that with the power gains you are looking for.

Here is a video of one of my runs with my currant exhaust setup. My C55 vs a members E55.

I have a Borlas on my Suburban and I love it but would not put them on a E55....I would either Gutt, Renntech, Eisenmann or Meisterschaft.

The sound I am after: E63 with resonator delete.

As you can see, I'm not after much sound. Just a nice clean rumble/growl.

How can I achieve this?
