Oil Temperature Problem

This just happened yesterday. The car has been running for a while at least an hour and I am sure the oil temperature should be warmed enough.
But the indicator still showing below 80 and it keeps blinking. Is there something wrong?

I have captured the video.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bd0FmGYY-GY

Does anyone know what causes it?

Definitely sounds that something is off After an hour, your oil temp should be at around 97 C. Maybe the sensor is going bad..... did you try shutting the car off completely and trying it again?

I'm not super familiar with the W211.. could the flashing indicate that the oil level is incorrect or does it only flash due to temperature?

It usually flashes until oil temperature is above 80 C then it stops flashing. In case of oil level, it actually displays a message in the instrument cluster.

It is very strange. I just happened couple days ago. It will show the correct number at the beginning when warming up. Then it goes randomly like 87, 89, 90, 92 then 70, 69,
82, 75, 70....etc. Unless I drive the car little hard, it shows 89 LOL.

But my question is if I my car was already running for an hour, the oil temperature has to be over 80, so even though the temperature sensor gone bad, I shouldn't be worry about the car right? I mean to drive it hard.

After warm-up my oil temp never drops below 98C? normally it is at least 100C constantly. Is that too high.

I post this because Jangy - you said that your 63's oil temp is 94C? My is never that low - no matter how cold it is. Also, my car will go up 113 C or even 117 C in traffic? It has done this since it was new and now has 24,000 miles on it?

The ambient weather does not seem to affect the oil temp even when it is hot? How and what would I tell the dealer to fix or check for this? Thanks in advance.

Whoa.... 113*C or 117*C in traffic is VERY HIGH... I think redline is at 120*C...

You need to make sure your fan works... ASAP!

I can hear it turning on and off - and if that was it - it would be that hot all the time? I will have the dealer look at it quick - but i would like to know what oil temps other 63 owners are running?

Actually, 94C was a typo on the number pad, I meant to write 97C. I fixed it above. Your car's oil temp may be slightly higher than normal, but that could be because of many other factors. I personally think it's okay.

Under light driving in nice cool weather, my oil temps usually range between 96 to 98 C. And if it was really cold outside, I've seen it dip to 95 to 96 C.

Under medium to heavy driving conditions, my oil temps have always stayed between 98 to 103 C. However, after multiple heavy acceleration runs (mainly 0-60 and 0-100 testing ) in hot weather, I've seen my oil temps rise to 113 C and 118 C a few times, but goes back down fairly quickly.

OK. My car is little hotter than that - but based on your numbers pretty close. Whew - I was worried. Man these things run hot! That's why i change the oil about every 7k - not the 10k recommeded.

They seem normal to me.... do you live in a very hot climate area? If so, then expect to add 5 to 7 C to your average 98C for normal driving conditions.

Oh my fault, I thought you were talking about your COOLANT being that hot... this is oil we're talking about so that's fine. Sorry.

Yes, I live in So Cal - inland and it is hot - so it seems that the temps are normal for the oil. The coolant never gets over half way - that is good. Thanks.

I've seen my oil temp at 123 C when I'm really pushing the car. That equates to ~ 253 F, which is hot no doubt, but not too hot. I believe at about 260 F you will start to have issues. Remember, the flashpoint for our oil is apporx 400 F....your pistons will melt before you ever get close to that.

My understanding is that when the oil temperature sensor goes bad, it reads toward the positive in most cases. My sensor went, and STAR would read 215 degrees C 10 minutes after a cold start at idle.

FYI Symptoms of high oil temperature reading:
Subsequently, the ECU would protect the engine (limp mode) by cutting/limiting throttle under load and choosing transmission modes (and gears) automatically.

Cheers

In normal running, depending on traffic and speed, I'm right around 100C. Get enough stop and go traffic and I'll see up to 113C. The last two times I've had it at the track I've gotten up to about 130 near the end of the session, but it always drops to around 105-110 by the end of the cool down lap.

Oddly, last time we were at the track a C63 and I were running pretty close, but his motor was pulling timing halfway thru a couple sessions (it was 102F ambient that day). I never had any timing getting pulled or overheated tranny alerts Go figure...

Same with my motor, so I think we're all doing fine with oil temps. Mine seems to sit right around 99-100C with normal driving and average traffic/speed. Freeway cruising after a sustained period (avg 80mph) in 70F ambient temps, it's at 98-99C.

The motor is pretty well stuffed into that engine bay, however. Even when driving at higher speeds, as long as the car is pulling in good outside air, the temp hovers around 98-100C. But because there's not a lot of room in there, when you're in intense stop and go traffic on hot days, the oil temp gets up to 105-110. But if you get it some air and start moving the car it immediately goes down.

Next time you've being doing a lot of heavy stop and go surface street driving in warm/hot weather, stop the car and get out and touch the fenders. They're super hot.

When I'm on the back canyon roads where I have the rpms up high with manual shifting and not much open road cooling, the temps will hit 110+ But it immediately will go down once I'm not so aggressive and just let the tranny do its own thing and driving around 2-2.5 rpms.
