Belt/pulley squeak at start up ...

Is anyone else getting this when first starting?

First start, every time, I get a belt/pulley squeak at idle for about 1-3minutes, then it quiets down.

This is not the kompressor clutch chirp (which I've yet to hear on this car)

She goes in today and I'd like to be able to sound like I have a clue whether or not this is normal. Sounds like it's coming from the right(drivers side facing car) side of motor, down mid way to low on motor.

Any help is appreciated guys.

Thanks

Could be power steering pump bearings or AC Compressor bearings.

Most likely they will just swap belts. Serpentine and/or supercharger first.

On cooler days on startup I get some squeak on that side down low but being out of warranty, I am waiting for something to fail before swapping out.

I'm thinking it sounds like a bad bearing. Not being familiar with the front components on this engine, my first thought was power steering pump on that side, but without taking the plastic cover off I can't tell.

Noise does go away completely once warmed up, but this is the only car I have that makes any kind of continuous noise at start up that IMO should not be there.

I have this noise also, I think it's pretty common. I was told that it is an injector pump?

It sounds like a bearing is going out but then the noise goes away on mine in about 30 seconds.

They will replace belts, but when they do that will check if the bearing on the other pullies are ok

Mine makes that noise also, and I have isolated it to the small idler pulley that the main accessory belt uses. If you remove the front engine cover and look down and to the right you can see it. I sprayed a dab of WD-40 on mine and the sound went away but came back quickly. The belts can also make some noise. A shot small shot of brakekleen or belt dressing will tell you if it's the belt or a pulley.

Sorry about bumping this thread but I'm getting the exact same squeal/squeek noise.

As like the OP, my squeeking goes away in about a minute or two of driving and will not make the same noise again until the next day (after the car has been sitting overnight).

If this was indeed a belt problem where would I bet able to order a new belt?

I had this problem, it was my belt tensioner. Had it covered under warranty.

I have the same thing. I bought the ASP idler pulley because I thought it may be that. It wasn't, so I took it to the dealer and they said everything was fine.

I have the same problem. We have discussed this before. Here is a short video I took on my Iphone. My goes away with warm up as well. I will replace both belts in the spring to see if the problem continues. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U8pmLKXj-7Y

What did you guys pay for the tensioner and belts? What does labor cost for something like this? Thanks!

I had that identical situation and it ended up being my idler pulley, which was covered under warranty.

The question is, how long did everyone's repair last.

Mine came back a few months later with new belt and pulleys.

Mine came back 2 months after

My belts are perfectly OK I really don't want to replace them again.

I replaced both belts and the noise went away completely. Like I said in an earlier post, just get a can of carb or brake cleaner and spray a bit on the belts. If the noise goes away, replace the belts. I bought both of mine from www.pelicanparts.com for something like $55 shipped to my door.

Edit: Noise has been completely gone for several months now.

Yep ... I had belts and pulleys replaced under warranty and it came back months later.

It can't be a belt alignment issue. That would be almost impossible in a serpentine set up like these. So it's got to be a pulley bearing design flaw IMO.

Same exact issues--I had both tensioners replaced and both belts and it was gone...You also might want to look at the bearings of your idler pulleys too if that won't take away the noise.

Actually, I just looked at my spreadsheet (I'm traveling) and my belt tensioner was replaced on July 30, 2008 when I had 34K miles. As of today, I have slightly over 52K miles...with no squeal.

So the squeal was due to your tensioner and not the idler pulley?

I had the same noise, at 1st i thought i was because we just had a big rain and my belts were just drying up, but it turned out to be the water pump - replaced, noise gone. 2 months later, noise has returned (only when cold) but on the other side, I suspect one of the other pulleys...

Yes sir. I'll check my work order when I get home to ensure I don't mislead. I remember idler pulley (probably incorrectly), but on my spreadsheet where I put notes, etc. I put belt tensioner. The pulley on the left as you are looking in to the engine compartment from the front...

watching the video it sounds like a pulley. they have something called belt dressing. for squeaky belts , better than carb cleaner. spray the belt lightly if it quits then its a belt. this stuff does last a while on the belt but it will return. if no change in sound then likely pulley , common is the tension pulley as others have mentioned. keep us updated. I to would be curious of the cost.

Mine has not come back. You replaced ALL of your pulleys? Did you use a scope to make sure you found out where the noise was coming from?
