Last week I ended up behind a W211 with E55 and AMG badges on the trunklid. It was a white or silver color. The California plates were not paper dealer plates; they appeared to be normal issue plates with current registration stickers, indicating the car had been registered for at least a little while. I was unable to see if the car had the Kompressor badges on the side. One thing was odd, it had the dual exhaust with 2 pipes, not the 4 pipe "quad" exhaust I thought was on all W211 E55's.

I only saw the car for a moment while I was exiting the freeway, and could not see the interior to look for the AMG gauges.

So, was that a real E55 prowling the highways or just a wannabe with the badges stuck on an E320 or E500?

What are all the clues for authenticating a W211 E55?

Anyone can buy AMG and E55 signage from the dealer or off eBay. The car you saw was a fake if it didn't have 4 pipes. As you know, the V8 Kompresser signage on the side is also required.

Sounds like an E500 that's an E55 wannbe.

There have been E55's in the States. They are euro spec and are for journalists and the like to test. There have been no deliveries of U.S spec E55's here yet and won't be for a couple of months.

Fake, and that kind of guy gives E55s a bad reputation, if involved on a race with a vette he'll get his a$$ kicked badly!

What has got me confused is the exhaust. The E500 pictures on the MBUSA site show no exhaust visible at all... do they airbrush them out or what? Other pics I have seen show a dual exhaust, one pipe on each side, just below the bumper. The Car and Driver E55 photos show what I thought was the true exhaust; 4 pipes, 2 on each side.

The possible (likely) fake I saw had dual exhaust.

Any definitive explanation of the three different configurations I have seen?

They can be ordered from AMG in Europe as seen on their photo from MB Worldwide. If the car said E500 or was debadged, it could still be considered real, but claiming it is something it is not makes it a poser. Posers should be ignored.

The car featured in the pic above is most likely the "Sport Package" isn't it? I'm from Japan, and here the "Sport" package comes with:

front and rear AMG skirts (no side skirts)
18" AMG wheels (not the double spoke)
AMG exaust tips (only one on each side)

Unfortunately, this sport package seems to look too similar to the real E55K and only enthusiasts would notice the difference.

This is the Euro sport package available on either an E320 or E500. Note single tail pipe on LH & RH only.

This is a real W211 E55 with the 4-tail pipe exhaust (2 on each side). Enjoy!

Thanks for the pictures! That's exactly what I saw. It must have been a E320 or E500 with the sport package; that explains the dual exhaust tips. I'm sure it had the sport package wheels as well, not the split spoke. Either the owner or the dealer slapped the E55/AMG badges on... for SHAME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

lol. that E55 on E-bay was too funny..

i have no idea where they got that engine cover with the AMG badge on the front...but if they knew, AMG has absolutely different engine covers...and those brakes look awefully small and tiny compared to the real deal.

i wonder if the wheels are 17 or 18's.....
