E63..... Smell of Exhaust
Today I was standing behind the car for a few minutes as it was running (middle of the day), and the exhaust literally smelled like rotten old eggs (it was putrid.) Not sure if it's because I have an aftermarket exhaust, but I have been around cars a lot for years - never smelled anything like it. Any ideas?

Catalytic converter has that sulphur smell - older chevy's used to that? My 63 has never had that smell though? Is that new? Maybe too much of the PEMEX gas!

I had the same smell with a '95 Chevy Blazer
( last GM product I will ever own) and was told it was caused by the cats not heating up correctly. Had a lot of issues with it and I'm not sure if it was the cause of the smell. With all the different gas out there now, the gas could be the problem.

I've noticed that too w/mine, and I have stock exhaust. The smell from mine is also pretty much like rotten eggs/sulfur, and it's pretty offensive, lingering in my garage for a good while. My driving habits are very similar day to day, but the smell's occurrence appears to be very random. It's kinda embarassing when a nice car emits such unpleasant odors. BTW, I try to always use "nicer" gas (e.g., Exxon, Shell; not Safeway, Giant, BJ's, WaWa, etc.).

You know, I have the same issue with my car. The general opinion seems to be "bad cats." Good luck getting the Dealer to buy off on this one. I am taking my car in next week for a few minor warranty issues (valve cover gasket/driver's door keyless entry button) and plan to talk to them about the stinky exhaust as well. If anybody has any experience out there having this fixed please let me know.

Mine smells like raw fuel at warmup. If the engine does not lit, the stealers not going to do anything.

That's the answer right there. ![thumbs](https://mbworld.org/forums/images/smilies/thumbsup.gif)
Last time I had a car that did almost exactly what the OP was describing ... the Cats were failing. On this particular car ... the cats failed to a degree that back pressure caused such bad performance they had to be replaced.
The cause was excess gas in combustion that overwhelmed the cats causing premature failure. The excess gas caused the cats to run too cool which in turn ruined them.
