Arrow Bad Fuel Economy

Well, this E55 is the most gas-guzzling car I've ever owned. Filled the tank up at 19.XX gallons and the thing only went a little over 300 miles... Do y'all have the same mileage per tank??? Anyway to make these cars a little more pump-friendly??? Any suggestions or feedbacks would be appreciated.

performance comes with a price and unfortunately one of those things is bad mileage.
just go easier on the pedal and do more highway driving but theres no fun in that.

300 miles? I only get that if I do all interstate driving.

I average around 250 miles before filling up, but I also do not go below a 1/4 tank usually either...maybe an 1/8.

Think these are bad, try the V12 models or the M series from BMW.

300 miles on 19-20 gallons is about right for this car if you're doing mixed city and highway driving. I get 13 city, 21 highway. There's no easy way to improve gas mileage on a healthy E55. If you have money to drop on this "problem" you can try a full tune-up with new air filters and 0w 40 full synthetic oil change.

LOL it's an E55. I hope you weren't looking for honda accord type gas milege. when I had my evo i was getting anywhere from 8 to 15 miles to the gallon with a 12 gallon tank. that thing was a beast and most of the time a was running 100 so i could push 29lbs of boost.

gas is going up so it's going to cost more and more as the summer comes. $100+ per week if you drive a lot.

Welcome to the world of a blower. When you hear the sucking noise from beneath the hood, there's alot more than air going through there. If you drive in comfort mode and do mostly highway, you can get really (relatively) good mileage. I get almost 20mpg (18.5+) every day going to work since it's mostly hwy and I make most of the lights. On the way home when traffic is worse, I usually get around 15. Just enjoy it!

Kipper, I had the same "problem" with my Evo VIII...great mileage out of boost on on the freeway or putting around town. But who the F wants to putt around town, OUT OF BOOST, with a turbocharged engine?

Once that turbo or supercharger engages, it's bye-bye fossil fuel...with a big grin accompanying the emissions

Yeah it's hard not to drive spirited in the AMG. especially when you get a good on ramp to a fwy and nothing is infront of you. I kill 2 gallons right there. foot to the firewall is a great feeling in that car. it's not as fast as my evo was, but that's like comparing apples and oranges. I was spending 150 a week on gas driving the car everyday sometimes a 100 miles in one day (I get paid 50 cents a mile when I travel). Now I car pool with the wife on days I don't travel to give the whip a break.

I didn't know that comfort mode cuts off the SC. I will try that an see if that makes a difference since I do a lot of FWY driving.

The SLR goes 4 miles on a gallon of gas at full throttle, so I don't think you killed two gallons on the ramp.

And comfort mode really only starts the car in second gear instead of first which helps a bit but not much.

Thanks for clarifying that. the notion of getting better gas milege at the press of a button really had me going.

Keep in mind that you own an $80,000 - $90,000 car - so gas and maintenance costs are relative. Although folks are picking up used 55's at great prices they forget that ownership costs are geared towards high income earners. The purchase price is just the initial entry fee!

Now - go spend money on mods and forget about the price of gas.

When in comfort mode, my car will shift sooner and smoother thus keeping the RPM's low which means better mileage...a little boring but I'm not exactly looking to drive it that hard in the morning. The afternoons are a little different though, for sure.

just got my HE and water pump yesturday. I'm still trying to figure out what pulley to get. I can't wait to experience the power difference myself. I'm tired of watching other people have all the fun in youtube videos.

even my E500 was doing only 280 to 300 miles in a full tank.....
I believe the fuel tank is the same size..... So if you can do 300 miles +
you must drive very good !

Yeah, with the E63 if I drive like a Grampa in C mode I'm actually getting 17 mpg city and 21 freeway. A lot better than I thought I ever would get!

But if I drive like Grampa, then there's really no point in owning the car

If you feel cheap on certain days, then drive like Grampa. If you wanna use some fossil fuel and add to Exxon's already big stash of cash, then drive the car like it's supposed to be driven.

Or, just pretend you have a Cadillac Escalade that's a little smaller but a helluva lot more fun.....

I drove 37 miles this morning in comfort mode at speeds of 70-80 and got 19.8 mpg. not bad for a little fwy driving. it went to 20.6 when I drove to the dealer for a wash another 20 miles or so.

It's got more room than my old Boxster... way more temperamental when it comes to straightline acceleration. Overall, I don't think there's any 4-door sedans out there than can match its performance. But the engine is way too thirsty, like the other guy said, it's Performance over MPG. BTW, I test drove the E63 and it sucked.

Well said, I'm already considering the RennTech pulley and airbox.

I've been getting 22mpg on Interstate drives. On average I get 17 with spirited driving, nothing to radical. I can drive like a Grampa only sooo long then it's time for a little joy ride!!
