W212 E63 AMG vs. W211 E63 AMG

I've been out of the loop for a while so please fill me in. What are the significant changes from the W211 E63 AMG to the W212 E63 AMG? I know the engine got a few more hp and a brand new 7-speed transmission. Is it dual-clutch?

I heard it's suppose to have the same tranny as the SL63. Which is 7 speed and dual clutch. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. I wanna know if it has launch assist?

I thought it was a wet-clutch design, not "DSG-esque"

I don't care if the entire tranny is made out of solid gold and wipes your a$$ for you, it's never going to be worth cringing every time you have to walk back to your car and it's parked with the rear end facing out.

Dual clutch technology will bring a massively enjoyable sporting character to the AMG disciples that love their current cars despite their autoboxes.

W212 is not as elegant, smooth, or "flow-ey" as the W211. The rear-end is probably the worst aspect of the W212, th designers truly messed that part up big time However the car is very unique and in time, it'll probably grow on us.

Yeah, but god forbid you accidentally park next to a Sonata...you'll be standing there looking like a dumba$$ wondering why your key isn't working...

IMHO...
I didn't like the 212 or 212 coupe in pictures, but after seeing them in person, I warmed to them pretty quickly. Especially when you open the door. The interiors are really nice. I didn't like the 204 in pictures, for that matter, but really like the car now.

Yes, it is supposed to get the SL63 tranny with the wet clutch and launch control.

Nice! Cant wait to see some 1/4 mile times from this new beast. Are they heavier then the W211? Hope not.

You guys see one in black on black I'm fairly confident you'll change your minds.

I saw it in grey at the NY Auto Show (presumably some of you did, also) and it was fantastic in the flesh. My 0.02

Unfortunately that didn't happen with me. That same black model with the AMG kit has crossed my paths twice, when I checked it out extensively, and think it looked just as bad, if not worse in person. pretty jarring and boxy design, even considering its more raked profile over the W211. If you put them side by side, and had never seen either before, I'd guarantee you wouldn't know which is newer, or dare I say one might think the W211 is. none of the smoothness or coherent flow of the W211. If that's someone's thing though, then it'll hit the right spot for them. Not to mention, at both Dealerships the cars were met with very scared and negative reactions by the Dealership staffers.

IMO, once the much improved and nicer than the model it's replacing F10 5-Series comes out, it won't be pretty for the E-Class. I'm sure the next M5 will be a helluva ride.

most 211 owners are going to hate it..... just like w210 e55 owners hated the w211....

This is common on all car message boards when a newer model/chassis is realeased...

When the W211 came out, most of the W210 guys liked it. A good chunk of them liked it right off the bat, especially the AMG model. Some of the old-schoolers complained a little about the departure from the "traditional" MB styling, but there was never so much backlash like there is with the W212. I mean, for chrissakes', this thing looks like a Sonata, to the point where you wonder why Hyundai isn't suing for copyright infringement...

I haven't compared actual data, but after seeing it in person it looks like there is less interior room - especially for the rear seat passengers. The trunk also looks much smaller. Even without those issues, I can't see paying that kind of money for a Sonata with a star on the hood and trunk. It's just plain ugly and cheap looking from the exterior, IMO. With the current economy, MB may have a hard time with this launch. There are way fewer people out there able/willing to shell out $ just to have the latest version and I don't think aesthetics will be a huge motivator.

Sorry, The W210 E55 owners could not jump ship fast enough, and I for one kept my W210 an could not wait to buy a W211. When the W211 E55 came out it was selling for $15K over MSRP. It had huge WOW factor. The W212 will be $10K under MSRP and not too much wow.

Seems MB is following Asian styling ques rather than setting their own unique style. It truly looks as if they cut and pasted Acura, KIA, Hyundai, Toyota features to build the W212.
