Bad news

Well what I thought would just be a key , and a seal with a whole bunch of labor time is going to be a lot more. This is what Chris said:
"Now that everything is removed and the effected area more visible, I can see that the "key way" not the key has been widened from the trauma or vibration, when the pulley flew off. I can continue to attempt to remove the gear, but I think its fused to the broken key or crankshaft. And to remove it will require grinding and cutting which may damage both the crankshaft and or gear. Options would be to replace the crankshaft and gear, which will require new bearings, and thrust washers. Or buy a whole new engine"

I have found a engine for $5500 that a member posted. But the engine is almost completely apart already and lifted off the front end so it wont take much to pull it out. I have found a crank , shaft , bearings and gear at this link. http://www.parts.com/oemcatalog/inde...layCatalogid=0

Would this part work? If so I think Im going to go that route and buy the parts. Is it worth it since my car has 86k miles on it? If I go this route any thing I should replace while the engine is apart? TIA

Sorry to hear your bad news my friend, but just to clarify a thing or two, what exactly happened for you to come to this stage ?? was your car stock or moddified in any way ??. Just seems strange something like this would happen out of the blue.

Ok, forget the above question as i've just spotted your sig.
Hope things go well for you.

thanks I hope things go well to , Im pretty sure these are the right parts it would be $1300 compared to $5500 for a new engine. so if these are right then I guess Im going to buy them. Thanks

RenntechE55,

Sorry to hear the bad news. You need to factor in the labor as well with the rebuild vs. replace routes. Chris will work with you on this... disassembling an engine is not easy and therefore not cheap, so maybe a replacement used short block may be a good alternative. I do not know the hours involved in either so it's just something to take into account. I'd have Chris write up both and then from there you can weigh the pros and cons.

Good luck,

-m

I would really check those parts out first. The E500 crank is an MB crank and not an AMG crank.. Two different motor facilities. You have a forged crank and that may be a cheaper cast crank..

To put a crank in, it may still cost you more than the motor for 5500. The whole engine need to come apart. The new crank will need to be balanced for your current piston and rods. So , lot of work to be done. Pistons have to come out the top.. Heads, blower, etc. will all have to come off. Lot easier to just pull a motor and drop a new one in..

So, the Pulley just flew off? Came loose? How many miles on the pulley?

RennechE55,

I found a crankshaft for $2640.00 from http://www.trademotion.com/splash/in...?siteid=214660

I don't think the on you are quoting is the right part #.

I've ordered from the link above before, they are good.

Good luck,

-m

Sorry to hear about your situation...

It'd be funny if you could find a 600 motor and shoehorn that in the 55er. Or better yet, a 65 motor...

It is not a direct fit but close. You need to swap your oil pan and oil pump. also some of the front cover and cooling lines are different. Other than that, it will work.. Just double check the few things you need to take off your motor..

Hey, if you pass on the CL motor, PM me.. I will be happy to keep an extra motor around..

He said he cant get the crank gear off the Crank shaft so he is afraid if tries to grind or cut it will damage the crank shaft. Well I might be going to cali this weekend to pick up this CL engine.

If you trust this guys work, then you may let him try and get it off , now that you have a back up plan. Nothing to loose at this point but may save $$$$.. A little heat may help, even if you have to change the front seal out..

Was already replacing the front Seal , he said he has tried to heat it up no but no dice. He said he can cut it for grind it to try and get it off be he doesnt want to break the crank. I think Im going to go with the CL engine since its such a good deal.

lol If it were that easy , I only have a little coin. Im pry the youngest E55 owner on the forum ( no my parents did not buy my car what so ever) so since I dont have full time job money is a little tight, but I can cover the repairs then I'll have to cut back for a while. Any chance you live around north LA? thanks

Damn, bro. What a tale this has become.

I wouldn't try to salvage the crank. It would be major time to try to shave it back into perfect shape. The other metals just weld on..

I agree with Rick and BenzBoi... trick it out!!

Last thing, make sure the CL55 engine works. I would be a little concerned with the electronics but have no idea.

Ya like I said thought I'll be lucky just to get it in the car without being in debt. Maybe I'll keep my old parts and trick them out and reinstalled them on the new engine , just an idea. The place that has the engine said the CL was rear ended , but it runs fine. Thats why i was hoping some one could swing by and take a look before I drive 350 miles. Thanks

I would opt for an engine swap, as long as there is no core exchange, Then part out your old engine to re coup some of the cost. This would be the most cost advantage with the least down time barring you fine an engine localy.
