Anybody ever dye their light colored headliner black?

I've never cared for the light grey headliners and always wondered if it can be dyed black to match the rest of the interior? Anyone ever done it? What product(s) did you use? I know the hard parts would be easy to change the color with a product like Surflex.

Thanks.

chuck,

May be easier to just buy it in black? I have black headliner from the factory in my 65, and I love it. Not sure if it was offered in black for the W211, but I'm pretty sure it was...

it's also not that difficult to get the headliner wrapped in black alcantara -- evosport does this to clk63 bs's all the time. any competent interior shop can do it for you.

Remember that the "oh ****" handles are grey and so is the rear view mirror, seatbelt sliders etc.

You can get headliner material from Michaels crafts- they do have Alcantara and it's a very simple diy job w/some 3m spray.

I got a quote for my W210 for Alcantara headliner, sunroof door, A,B & C pillar, no color change so hardware remained same. $2200.00

Alcantara alone was $600. So a dye job is the most cost effective way to go.

Thanks for all the great info guys. I'm not concerned about the hard parts like the oh ***** handles, hooks, light surrounds as I can use Surflex and dye/paint them black. Stuff works great, I dyed the door handles on a refrigerator that we had painted black about 15 years ago and it was tough stuff and never showed any wear.

I'm wanting to do this on the cheap so I really don't want to spend that kind of money to do the job. Having said that, I do want it to look like it was professionally done and while I love alcantara on the headliner I'm okay with just changing the color of the stock headliner. Besides, it's a 55 wagon so there's a LOT of headliner....

There has to be a sprayable dye that will do the job.......

Speaking of headliner, how do you all clean your headliners? What kind of products if any do you use to clean the headliner in the car...

You don't ever want to use any products on the suede headliner. If anything, I think you're supposed to use a soft brush, not even those sticky lint rollers either!

I use the soft bristle brush atachment on the vaccuum cleaner. For stains, I would try a very mild soap and water first.

My 07 E63 has black(or charcoal gray) suede headliner. I wouldn't want it any other color. I'm sure you can find factory material.

One from Mercedes is over $3,500.

Someone did this on a bmw forum, but I can't find the link. This is awesome.
