How to make my e55 sound louder without spending too much :)
How to make my e55 sound louder without spending too much :)
The title basically states the question. I am not looking into any major changes like headers or the whole exhaust system, if there is a way of course. Like exhaust tips or mufflers? How much would it cost if you know, thanks.
Remove your exhaust + cats. Had it done on my E55, wasn't too loud but it definitely sounded epic at WOT. Friends said it sounded like an SLR pulling up. Easy and cheap. I realize a lot of people may be against removing all that because of "power-loss" or whatever but I actually noticed an improvement in the throttle response (I had the set-up coupled with twin K&Ns). The whole set-up (K&Ns) included shouldn't cost you more then 4-500 bucks.

Are you saying you removed just the muflers? If your saying you removed the exhaust just past the minifolds and thats how you drove it like that, then I would have to say thats insane and not very likely. Loud does not come close to discribing it. So to answear your question, I would find a good tusted exhaust shop in your area and replace your Just your mufflers with a good high flow muffler, I have and like maganflow but there are many other. you dont need to buy some crazy exspensive e55 only exhaust, any good shop should be able to direct you to a happy result. I have pixs and sound clips posted here, just search for my name.

have a competent muffler shop open the muffler, remove the packing, then weld them back up. it shouldn't cost more than a few hundred and it sounds better than any exhaust system under $3000 with no annoying drone.

The gutted option is a great cheap way to go (unless you have to reverse it come sale time). Check out my option, it IS pretty loud but I like that. Also very easy retrofit to go back to stock

These videos don't play, youtube is better for video upload and you can make it private so it's not broadcasted, I think. what are VRP mods? sorry for my lack of education on the mods for e55 as I am a new owner.

Turbomzi,
Why do you want to make your car louder? The best part of the E55 is it's ability to go stealth. Rolling down the 236 Fairfax City bypass in a loud car will turn every head, including those officers that stand on the sidewalk with instant on. Stealth is a good thing in this county of Fairfax, and even better in this state of VA!
However, if you decide to go that route, let me know. I'm close and I'd be happy to help. I have about every tool one could ever need to modify a car.

Reviving a very old thread here. Just curious, has anyone considered exhaust cutouts?? You can go stealth if you want with the valves closed, or open them up and attract alllll kinds of attention
They're around $300-400 for dual 3" kit, would just need welding of the y-pipes and running the switches up to the driver area. QTP makes the best one it appears.
This dude has them:
Besides, the OP said he didn't want to do major mods or spend too much, just wanted a louder exhaust. Can't get better then open headers!
I know the OP was years ago, but just for future reference sake, I'd say install an X-pipe ($80-100 for the pipe, anywhere from $40-80 for install, depending on the shop) in place of the 2nd cats, and take out the resonator and replace it with straight pipes. Then see how you like it. If it's not loud enough, get the cutouts installed right after the X-pipe, and have the option to go from insanity loud, to just the nice normal AMG rumble/growl
X-pipe+2nd cats gone should be loud enough for most people. That's how my CLS55 is now, and it's pleeenty loud.
Any opinions on exhaust cutouts for our AMG's? I know domestic guys love them on the LS1's and crap, just curious if many MB V8 guys are going that route or if it's "frowned" open...
