You can use VMWare, AND use a usb to serial adapter, and it works great (I run it on my Mac laptop all the time) Just gotta get use a serial dongle with the right chipset, then adjust the serial settings to run faster, then setup your VM to use 3gb ram, and finally set the default JVM environment to use more ram (I use -Xmx1024m)

I don't think he was asking about this of course he can use a USB to serial adapter. But he still has to use the same cable. I think he wanted to know if he can use a USB OBD2 cable which he cannot. And that is what I said already.

Is there a certain STAR program we need, does it have to be throat up to date? This seems like a fairly good deal to me.m
I would personally get it from someone that can help you later down the road. Someone like Mackhack. You have any questions and he can guide you.

Agree. Well, I spent two nights trying to get it to work and it wouldn't. I don't think it was the laptops fault as when I ran the Xentry or DAS simulators they were quick enough. The bloke I borrowed it off thinks that maybe my EC tune could be stuffing it around?

Interesting. I'll have to see how he went with it, as he had planned on doing a service to his E320 this weekend. The computer may just be dead... Damnit! I don't think there are many people (if any) with a STAR computer in Darwin.

Well, maybe an idiot check in order. My old Ford system would work with just the key in. Appears I am meant to have th key in the 'on' position, so we are gonna give it a whirl on Wednesday as he serviced his SLK and E series with no dramas. Bit red cheeked as a result.m

The star system should work with no key in the ignition. OBD II port will receive communication regardless.

Incorrect information. Some control units work with wit at least key in pos 1 some require pos 2. None work with off pos. DAS and Xentry will tell you to turn on ignition if it's off.

Even cheap OBD 2 readers won't work with ignition off. Power is there but the data lines are not powered on hence no joy.

Sorry I wasn't specific at all. The star system will detect the car with the no key and run an initial test on your electronic ignition system and it will give you instructions from there whether or not to turn on ignition. So if your star isn't detecting the car with no key it probably wont with any position. Not saying you can run tests and do diagnostics with no key but das will detect the car and get your vin number etc.

Wrong again. Upon vehicle selection it will give you an error message that it can't detect the multiplexer for a variety of reasons like no power or bad cable. At that point you have to turn the key to POS 2 and restart the initializtion or you will see the message again.

Have you ever used a SD? Doesn't seem like it.

The reason I posted what I posted is from personal experience. I had a fuse blow for the eis and the car would not detect the key at all nor would it lock/unlock with the key fob. Plugged in my SD multiplexer lights green instantly and das detects the multiplexer and the car. DAS boots up and I select my car etc and it runs initial tests on my eis. DAS tells me the eis is getting no power and guides me as to what fuses to check. Ends up being the fuse, same amp fuse blows instantly, put in a bigger fuse and cars functions perfectly. Ended up being the car siren battery went bad, replacing it fixed the issue with the fuse blowing. I can make a step by step video for you on how the das loads and runs an initial test with no key in the ignition. The SD is designed so that the car can be diagnosed in any situation which is pretty great.

Not for me. I didn't know you where part of the design team in the 90's who built the SD system that you know how it's designed to work without power

In all seriousness: never in 10 years did it work without a key in any vehicle. You must have a special one then. Congrats!!!

Holy **** you are stubborn. When you unlock your door with the fob or metal key the lights turn on, the radio functions all with no key in the ignition, so does the obd2 port. I don't know why you are so defensive and reply in such a dickish way. Do you want me to make a video? just say it and we can all learn.

Just tried it without a key and I'll get an error message when I go into let's say My ME control unit. Do you get that too?

I didn't get that message, das was giving me step by step instructions on checking my eis because it detected that it had no power. I will try again without the key now that its functioning maybe I will get another message.

I'm not sure if this is the right place for this question but if I were considering the investment of a STAR system, which would be the best and most affordable route and what all would be needed? I'm looking for a shopping list of sorts and perhaps some reading material/ instructions to get learned on before I start playing with my car..

I just did some quick googling and found this. Would this be a good starting point or?

Well, tried again today. Had the bloke who owns the gear take me through it. Same issues. He was dumbfounded. He hasn't had a car do it before. He is thinking that the tune may have something to do with it. But I'm doubtful.

He is using Xentry 2012, so he is calling his tech support to see what they think and I've emailed Jerry at EC to see what they think. I'm considering flashing to stock to see if it makes a difference.
