When to buy the Extended Limited Warranty and other Q's?

So I decided to take the plunge on an '09 E63.

1) Is it better to buy the Extended Limited Warranty in the first 30 days to get the discount or do you wait until the end of the 4year/50k warranty? I figure it might be better to wait b/c I might sell the car or trade in the car before that and may not need the warranty. OTOH I don't like the styling on the W212 so much and may have to wait for the next production cycle.

2) Do you keep a quart of engine oil in the trunk just in case? I've been reading about oil consumption with the 63 engine on the C63 and E63 boards.

Only 400 miles of break in left to go.

If it is a Mercedes warranty and you are going to keep it, buy the warranty now if you can get a good deal.

If it is aftermarket warranty, the chances of the company being around in 4 years is often slim so consider waiting if that is the case.

The dealer offer for the MB Extended Limited Warrant is about $6100 for 7 years and 100k miles. The cost goes up to about $7k after 30 days of ownership. Is this price fair or should I keep looking?

If it is the factory certified warranty and you are going to keep the car then buy the warranty. It will only get more expensive. Also, you might be able to get them to deal a bit on it but I have no experience here as mine had the 7yr/100K on it when I bought it and it is worth it's weight in gold for resale, etc.

Yeah it is whether or not I'm going to keep the car for > 4 years is the question I don't have the answer to. Now I found out the warranty service for the car started in Sept when I bought the car in Dec. I read about other dealers doing the same, but they didn't tell me about it. I found out when I was shopping around for a warranty.

That's a rip off. It's only a couple of years on top of the regular warranty. The same warranty for my sedan is c.$3,500 which I know as I'm planning to get one. Warranty's are negotiable so tell them you'll give them 4k (or 5k if you want the to say "yes" in two seconds flat). At $6,100, they're just seeing if a fool and their money are easily parted. Got to love stealerships.

Have you called or emailed LISA? She is great to work with and offers full ELW warranties by Mercedes for your car I believe. I think she works for a Mercedes dealership in northern California. Just do a quick search for her in the forums. Her name is all over here. I got my ELW warranty through her. She is very very busy so email is your best option. She rarely answers her phone. She will get back to you though. Give her all the details in the email in order to get moving past all of the preliminaries so she can shoot you a price. Good Luck!

The MB warranties are negotiable from dealer to dealer. So shop around. As you already know, you'll get a discount if you do it within 30 days. Also the price goes up each year, so if you wait until near the end of your factory warranty it will cost more.

But the big thing is that you can "return" it if you decide you don't want it. If the car is still under factory warranty, you can return it for a full 100% refund. If you have gone past the factory warranty, you can still return it, but it will be pro-rated. So it's a win-win situation. You can elect to also keep it and transfer it to the new owner if you sell the car (making the sale a better incentive for the buyer.) Or get your money back if you sell the car (or it's totaled in an accident, etc..)

Keep the car on the factory warranty until it ends, because you would be duplicating 4 years of warranty. Then go to a warranty company just before the warranty ends and purchase what you want. Before purchasing make shure you go over the contract to make sure you get a compatable contract.
Doing it this way will save you a bundle, plus you can walk away,or use it as a selling tool. Not to mention peace of mind in knowing that the car is covered.
In most cases an aftermarket warranty let you keep the bad parts MB requires everything that was replaced. Also some Warrant company inspectors has no clue about MB,so they just ok it.MB on the other hand get technical.

Thanks for the responses. Anyone know the general ballpark for a fair price for the 7yr/100k miles warrant?
