Yes - sanded down and cleaned the surface of the fins before paint...

Used the highest quality paint I could find and it turned out pretty well - until the rock chips starting setting in...

Wouldn't recommend it unless you buy a grill that is made black

Black grilles have been discussed many times here. Did you even bother to use the search function?

Here's a shot of the flat black grille I bought on eBay:

Some guys have tried to contact the eBay seller without success. I'm surprised no other vendor has a similar grille to sell; all of the black ones for the W211 seem to have the CL style emblem in the grille - which IMO looks horribly wrong on a W211.

Had mine painted flat black, and the rock chipping started immediately. Sucks.

If you're patient I have a company working on a carbon OEM grill.

I don't care if I pay the ludacris amount and it's the only one... I'm so in love with the look that Taso got with 3M diNoc vinyl.

Hopefully it's fitment and quality is flawless and will spark a group buy to manufacture them

Should be ready in late April.

I had mine sanded (chrome removed) and painted. 3M makes a clear film for it to protect against rock chips (totally necessary). A+.

I'm def interested in the Carbon one, sign me up... if it resembles the factory style (same # of slots). I have seen a carbon one on here somewhere, but there were less # of slots and I think it made it look cheapo. (personal preference)

I agree. The company that is working on it has an OEM E55 Grille. They are instructed not to call me until it looks exactly like it lol.

Again I'm being told April, so we'll see.

E55 w/ goods, Z32 Project underway
If you going to do it, do it right. take it down, primer, base, and clear, to avoid any rock chips. I am actually going to paint my grill silver one of these days along with the exterior chrome.

I am actually doing it right now. I have peeled all of the chrome off with a razor and my fingernails. Sucked but I think it will be worth it. I then sanded it and washed it. Right now I am waiting for the last coat of primer to dry before I paint it. Hopefully it lasts.

Did you try just sanding the chrome off?

Yeah, I tried to sand it off but it didn't work good at all. It would probably take longer to sand it then to peel it off. Maybe if you had a better sander than a Black and Decker Mouse.

I just bought a silver 06 and the PO had a black grill for it as well as the chrome one. I like the black grill on a black car but not sure on the lighter colors unless it's tied in w/ other trim items like wheels, badges, etc. So I might be putting the black one on ebay.....
