Did it - e63 parked next to my e55

Was all over the map on this one. Keeping the 05 e55, wife will now roll it. Looked at s550, m5, etc etc based on not having two very similar cars moving forward. But I could not get over fact that the e is the perfect fit for me (one kid, clients etc so 4 doors were a must). Mapped against size, luxury and performance it was a no brainer.

Ended up with a CPO 08 e63 with 10k miles. Loaded with everything including pano which is a big hit with the kid.

With 3 days under my belt, here are the observations stock vs stock:

-I miss my SC whine, especially in the morning. Was like my 3rd cup of coffee to get me going.
-e55 growl came from engine bay, e63 the rear exhaust.
-sound of e63 exhaust is music to my ears.
-as stated by others, e63 much more linear in power. More of a pull effect than push from the e55.
-kickdown in the e63 when in D takes forever. Much slower than the e55.
-although all shifts, especially in M are much quicker in e63.
-can smoke tires off line in either, and spin thru the gears no problem.
-linear equals less jerks, which I had come to love.
-big adjustment in 5 speed to 7. Learning new shift points. Bottom line both are a blast in manual.
-have not done a deep dive, but e63 mpg seems worse than e55 under similar driving conditions.

Bottom line, two of the funnest cars to drive period when taking performance and comfort into account.

I get 26 mpg in my CLS?? 24 is common. 6-7 mpg on the drag strip lol. and 13-16 in town

Sorry that was a short response to a very nice summation of the two cars. Totally different yet both incredibly fun, practical, safe, its a flipping great sedan. Wish I still had my 03 E55!

How fast do you cruise to get 24-26mpg in Hollywood? It's not like cruising across West Texas with no hills! I'd love to know how you do it.

No joke, best I've ever seen in the car was 22 on the way back from Austin...Anything around 20 seems like good gas mileage to me after my Land Rover (12.5)

Another thing I noticed. The ESP would shut you down very quickly in the 55 whereas the 63 lets you get a bit looser with the rear. The first day I had the 63 thought the ESP was malfuctioning and I was flirting with death in the rain, but it was there.

In general much more spinning with no ESP light than the 55. Guess MB listened to all the complaints...

A lot looser for sure. If I'm in C in the rain, and kick down too hard, it'll go down 2 gears and the back end does the shimmy

I believe Juicee meant 26 mpg on the freeway. One time I was with him in the car on route to Sacramento and I recall seeing 25 mpg.... I didn't know he had beat that since then

The best I've ever hit on the freeway was 23.8 mpg....

Congrats on the new ride

Regarding the mpg, I've been averaging 11-12 mpg. But when I went to Vegas with my wife (who doesn't like me going faster than 80mph) I averaged around 25 mpg and had to only fill up the tank once to get me back the last 40 miles.

With my wife's X5 we had to fill it up twice on the way there and on the way back, that sucker is thirsty and averages around 280 miles per tank

Actually, and this is odd, the CLS is a LOT less aerodynamic than the W211 E-Class, the CLS is at a (actually pretty poor) .31, and the W211 at a .27.

How that is, I have no idea, the CLS certainly LOOKS much more aerodynamic. M-B obviously put more engineering strength into making the 3-Box Sedan look of the E that efficient in a Drag Coef way.
