Post Goodbye Black Series, Hello Green

For those on you comtemplating whether or not to buy and AMG, the truth will set you free. I'm glad that I have mine already, because in the near future, these high HP cars might just go the way of the dinosaur. Is AMG biting off the hand that feeds them? You decide for yourself. Please read the below press release from AMG.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
An environmentally-friendly AMG car may be a stretch of the imagination, but the Affalterbach-based company has revealed that it will unveil its first hybrid model by 2010.

In an interview with UK Car Magazine, AMG boss Volker Mornhinweg explained that the upcoming hybrid model will usher in a 30 percent improvement in fuel economy over Mercedes’ 6,2-litre V8 thanks to technology borrowed from the company’s S400 BlueHYBRID.

Mornhinweg also stated that the days of extreme horsepower – such as the moderately insane 493 kW SL65 Black Series – are behind the German tuner. Instead, AMG will look to pare down the kerb weight of its vehicles, while the power output will be capped at ‘just’ 373 kW.

“Although hybrids normally mean more weight, we’ll use our knowledge of lightweight material to offset this increase,” said Mornhinweg. “And don’t forget, AMG is all about torque, and electric engines develop their torque at standstill.”

Diesel technology will form a small part of AMG’s future plans, with Mornhinweg revealing that only a single AMG model (most likely a small four-door saloon…think C-Class) will be earmarked for diesel.

I'm all for a hybrid if its done well and is used to increase performance and efficiency. Take the Accord hybrid for example, its the fastest Accord offered. The ability to have peak torque at 0rpms can be very useful. But done wrong it could be a disaster. I'll be keeping my E55 till there is another V8 forced induction offering. Even if that means I keep it forever.

Greener

Mercedes has said that their going greener, the 6.2 liter is going away for 2011. The are no longer going to produce big V8's, instead smaller displacement V8, like the 5.5 liter, that will be twin turbocharged for 2011. I'm glad that I have my big block 6.2, their is no replacement for displacment.

We always knew they were going to turbos, and more power to it. Turbos = more power.
They just need to make sure they keep some type of exhaust note.

AFAIK, the S400 Hybrid really isn't heavier than a normal S-Class. It is the first hybrid vehicle to use a Lithium Ion battery. The battery is about the same size as the normal S-Class one.

They have done this once before. There was a C32 (in addition to the more common C32 Sedan) in '02 that was based on the C230 coupe and had a turbo diesel and most of the usual AMG underpinnings. It did not sell well and this Euro only model was quickly discontinued.

When AMG was started by Melcher and Aufrecht it was a tuning company for building motors for road racing. Now it's solely owned by Daimler AG which is a publicly held, for-profit company. (Melcher and Aufrecht made some money from their hard work and more power to them for that.)

Daimler AG will do what it sees appropriate in order to make money. Using the AMG name to sell high performance gasoline engines and cars worked. If Daimler AG feels it might work better in terms of profit to now go another direction, then they'll try that. What else can you really expect? AMG is no longer AMG, but simply a brand of Mercedes. They'll do whatever it takes to sell AMG labeled cars. That's why they stuff in a big fat motor and an AMG label on just about every model they make. I think I'll take the SUV out around the track, honey.
