2009 E63 AMG
Continental Contisport3 Tires in Winter
New to AMG so bear with me. I live in OH and dont feel like spending the money this year on snow tires. If I drive on the factory performance tires in cold weather, no snow, just cold weather will that destroy the tire or cause heavier wear and tear?

The grip is what I figured but thought I would ask just in case i needed to get out in an emergency. Have a secondary car but still would like to run the AMG!

I have the Conti 2's on mine and although I don't drive it much in the winter I have not had a problem with them. I never would consider driving in snow or ice with them. I can tell there is about half the grip that's there in Summer. If you don't "drive it like you stole it" you should have no problem.

Look at the Conti ExtremeContact DWS. They're a high perf all season tire. I have them on my SL600 and E500 during the winter months and they're fantastic. And priced pretty damn good too....

OP - You are putting yourself and others in danger with CSC3's in winter. At least get A/S tires to replace.
If anything ever happened with your car in the winter, you'll be really upset you didn't spend a few hundred on tires. If you get a high HP car and don't plan to keep it stored in the winter 100%, it's a big risk with summer tires in anything under 45F.

Unless you really like to throttle-steer, I'd consider some A/S tires or Blizzaks. Those things are hockey pucks in the cold.

I rarely use the e55 in the winter. I have a buddy that owns a tire place and he recammeneded the Conti Extreme so I went for it and so far I think they are an all around excellent tire. I had my heart set on the Michelin Pilot sports and he said just try them if you don't like them Ill change replace them.
They also came with a one year warrenty.

...so brings up the next questions...best All season or winter tire for the money? for those that switch tires do you have a 2nd set of cheaper rims or keep the factory amg wheels on the winter tire?

Like a couple people said, grip will be way down at first, but after like 5-10 miles at highway speed they will warm up a bit. I'd have to disagree that they are "dangerous" when it's just cold and dry. Precip is a whole different story. I run Nitto NT05's on my E, and it's well below 45 a lot here in Dallas. If it is, I just drive like a pansy for the first 5-10 miles, or until the vibration goes away. After that I've got about 80-90% full warm weather traction. I don't even take my car out in the rain though, so yeah A/S tires are probably a good idea on some knock off AMG wheels..??

I live in Buffalo NY, ive driven through a foot of snow this winter on summer tires and I have yet to get stuck.
Traction control works well, but if you have trouble, just turn it off and give it hell and youll start moving

I have no doubt that snow in a 55/600 (or anything heavy, high in HP and rear wheel drive) can be done but honestly, why risk it? Lots of things can be done - doesn't necessarily mean they should be...

dont even bother with summer tires. really, you're asking for disaster. I love my Nokian Hakka R's and have had great success so far this winter in them (and I could have screen shots showing -18F, but mpg closer to 14).

Aside from the Nokian's, there are other good tires out there, so exact brand less important than having ANY tire that's suited to the job. Wheel packages on TR are cheap, so no need to mount/dismount.
One last time: If you are going to driver her, to so with proper gear. Don't show up to a gun fight with a butter knife.
