3" mid X pipe and race cat install..

Planed to do long tubes and mid pipe at the same time but still unable to conform any that will fit my body style.. Want to Race the Texas mile in 5 weeks but must have headers to run full boost for 29 seconds.. Frustrated would be a kind word for the dilema..

Pulled the stock mid pipe and cats down and cut the top of the primary cat off, just wide enough so a 3" 45 deg bend would weld flush to it.. Front 02`s are still in their same small 2" pipe but then it goes right to 3", a pair of dynomax race cats and X pipe.. Stock manifold outlet opening is only 1.62ID, so until those are changed, power gains are only in the 15-17 hp range..

Stock city and hwy cruise is now quieter than stock (thank the X pipe) but damn it gets loud under boost..Sounds like a high RPM race car now.. Much louder than an E55 with only second cats/resonator removed too! Much louder.. I guess you could say it is the best of both worlds now.. I did leave my resonators on too.

Here are a few pictures.. This is a $145.00 3" Pypes tunnel mid X pipe and I added two race cats for 68.00 each.. Took some welding and cutting but should be easy for a decent muffler shop to do..

Pic of passenger side front 02 . This showes the wide area cut off the top of the cat with 3" pipe welded in place of stock cat. Race cats are horizontal under the car.

Pypes mid X with cats.. Don`t eye that custom pulley holder and cheater bar either..

Excuse the mud but had to go off-roading to get on the lift that day..

E55, Supercharged Z4 (sold)
Where did you find race cats that cheap? Jegs has dynomax cats at around $132.99 3" in/out and 18" long. 2 way convertor although I don't know what that means yet.

Yes it is.. Bought it from summit and made by "Pypes".. It is a 3" tunnel mid X pipe style.. It neded a little tweaking to fit but was not bad for 141.00 bucks..

Very creative cutting the cat to match the 3" piping.

Thanks. No codes either and data log shows emmissions is in ready mode.

Here is the 3" mid X pipe I bought but found it cheaper on one of the catalog sites.. not sure how they can make it so cheap, even if they used China.. It is SS and tig welded X.. http://www.pysales.com/iwwida.pvx?;i...0%201?comp=ppe

I noticed there are two different metals used.
Whats the difference between 409 stainless and 304 polished stainless? Which ones better?

I have a custom set up as well.. with 2.5" pipes and 2.5 X pipe in place of the resonator.

I deleted 2nd cats and kept the primary untouched.

I was going to do 3" pipes, but the whole system is bottled by the exhaust manifolds and also the pipes vary from 2.5" to 2.75" on various places.

Anybody know if moving the X pipe more to the front or more to the back makes a difference in sound??

For example..I deleted my 2nd cats.. and placed straight pipes... and removed my resonator and placed X pipe.

Should I have placed X pipe on the 2nd cats locations and leave straight pipes on the resonator location?

Are you bored or something? Is it your mission in life to revive old threads?
Can you use the search function?
