Brabus K8 E55 05
Question S/C clutch or bearing or what (need advise urgent)

I know that this topic was discussed over and over many times, but I really would like to get the latest answers and advice.

I have Brabus 2005, I can hear the sound of squeek on the belt when I step on the gas just when the S/C engaged and also when changing gear 1 to 2 (Auto). Another situation where it makes me really angry is that I can hear this F***ing sound when I accelerate hard (of course will indicate some slip and this for sure will result in hp drop, or am i wrong?)

The answers that I got after some research:

1- change to upgraded 2006 S/C clutch (cheapest here is 1300USD outside dealer)
2- change bearing of the S/C clutch

Now, I want to know which one will solve the above problem forever, if second choice can, that would be great, but if not, I am ready to go with 1st choce even if it is expensive, however i don't wanna pay all that money and found out the problem is still there.

Your feedbacks are so appreciated because within 12 - 14 hours I will take my car to the mechanic to change the clutch or change the bearing.

Sorry for repeating this topic but I would like to get clear and new answer from experienced members.

Whatever we're tuning!
Ahmed- Try changing the belt first and see if that mitigates the sound that you are experiencing.

Your headers just left from France!

Why not change the SC pulley bearings first, if that doesn't work go with your other option.

+1 on the belt and worth the 50$ for a new one anyway but I would bet it is the clutch.

When I got the upgraded clutch, mine went totally away.

Just my 2 cents, don't go bearings, go clutch.

Do a search for squeak on the E55 forums. It's quite common.

and 1300 is about right for it. Paid 1200 for mine with buddy that works at dealer discount. Benz parts = rape.

Belt has been changed as part of service done recently and believe it or not, I paid 500USD for Brabus Belt because I had no choice, this same belt cost 300USD from Brabus in US as my brother told when he cotact Brabus, what a shame, they steal our money over here in the gulf, people may say shipping cost, well parts to the US walk or fly by itself from Germany !!!! of course no. It is the policy of stealing money of customers.

It looks like I will go for the clutch as most of the people recommended praying that it will fix the issue. I have no choice but to pay

Bruce,

Thanx a lot for your quick response and movement for the headers, I am tracking, it is supposed to be in UAE by now as it lefts france long time ago.

If the SC clutch is slipping bearings are not really going to help, unfortunately if you are getting rough enagagement and the famous chirp when in lower gears I think you'll need to go the route of new SC clutch pack.

Like others have stated, does not appear to sound like the bearing.

Or change the bearing, and re-shim the pulley to the correct spec... As i just did this and it got rid of the rattle from missing bearings, and the chirp because it was re-shimmed correctly. No need for a whole new "Pulley/Clutch"

Local MB service manager states that this squeak is nothing to bother about and claims that MB have replaced entire sc units trying to stop squeak without success.
Will be interested to find out if clutch replacement fixes issue.
Good luck!!!

I had the typical chirp on my SL55. I lived with it for about a year when the SC clutch bearing failed. I then had a new clutch assembly installed. The chirp is gone and SC engagement is smoother. IMHO if you have clutch chirp and it doesn't bother you, don't replace it, but do inspect your clutch bearing from time to time.

I have had the squirk since I get the car 2 years ago with 30kmiles...

always tough it was a normal S/C noise of the air getting sucked in...

I now have 50k/miles been beating it up... changed spark plugs ... Also had to change the I/C waterpump at about 45k/miles

So what should i do as pre-maintenance I wanna keep this car for 150k/miles +

considering I am putting in renntech stage 3, with exhaust ...

So if the noise doesnt bother me, should i still change S/C clutch I am not worried about $ to make the car last forever...

Best answer right here. Check your shim spec...

Regarding shim sets. A guy that used to be an MB tech told me MBs early remedy to the 55k chirp was a shim set. He said they later abandoned the idea because it was typically a temporary fix. I tried shims on my 55k to solve the chirp. It did for a short time. I then replaced the clutch pack and the problem has been solved for many miles now and I tend to "enjoy" my car as the tech put it.

Shims are cheap and if they work for the long run then they are a great fix. I know I am a broken record, but check your bearing periodically.
