5W-40 OR 0W-40..for the E55

As the title says, shopping for 5w-40. I used to be able to find oil and filters online for my vette and that was usually a lot cheaper than the brick and mortar stores.

where do you guys get yours?

Edited the title since there is seems to be confusion on which to use!

Thx.

Mercedes moved away from the original Mobil 1 5W-40 to 0W-40, and now the current 5W-40 is recommended only for trucks. Then they brought back a new 5W-40 ESP Formula 1, which is supposed to be recommended only for the 63 engines. All other models are advised to use Mobil 1 0W-40 except for SLR. Unfortunately, the new 5W-40 ESP formula 1 is designed specifically for Mercedes Benz and is very hard to get except from the dealers. Luckily, however, there are a few wholesale dealers out there that are selling them to the public. This is one of them:

I've used them in the past, and they were very reliable

yep, Mobil 1 0 W40
Like MB forever stated Mercedes did switch to 5 W40 for a few months then went back to the 0 W40. The bottle will state for "AMG" on the back.
FYI the 55 has 2 drain plugs that are called one time use by Mercedes, members have used thread sealers to re use plugs. One other item, the 55 has to be drained from below, the oil can not be fully extracted with a vacuum system.

Per this post here..., AMG recommends the following:

This occurs as the automotive fluid standards have changed in the meantime (in May 2008).

In general, the following fluids should be used for AMG engines :

- Mobil 1 5W-40 for M156 engine (63er models)
- Mobil 1 0W-40 all other AMG engines (as well the AMG diesel engines that was used for the C 30 AMG)
- Mobil 1 5W-50 SLR engine

Before that change, the Mobil 1 0W-40 was used for the 63 models as well.

Best regards,
AMG Private Lounge Team

I bought my Mobil1 5W40 Formula M from AVLubricants, linked above, but it didn't appear on their website. Customer service found it at another warehouse. My dealer only has it in their bulk tank, no quarts.

Thanks folks. I will check out walmart for the 0w-40. For the brake fluid, it looks like it has to be done properly with the STAR system so I will be getting that done at the dealer (charging $115.00).

5w-40 is recommended if filling up with gas that contains 10% ethanol

5w-40 is recommended if filling up with gas that contains 10% ethanol.

This is why MB is now recommending the 5w-40 instead of the 0w-40.

I bought mine directly from MB for the new C and my E at the same time.

At least this is what has been explained to me when I asked for 0w-40, they basically said no.

Got my quarts for $7.50 each at MB.

They are only recommending 5W-40 ESP Formula M for the 63 models.... For all other AMGs, they recommend 0W-40 with the exception of the SLR.

Whats this with the Star and Brake Fluid change???

I was getting ready to flush and change my power steering and brake fluids.

What is this about needing STAR to properly do at least the brake fluid?

I was just planning on doing it myself with an extraction pump.

Please advise if I should just let the dealer handle this. Never heard of needing STAR to do this.

I believe you can only do a partial bleed with an extraction pump and the proper flush can only be done through the STAR system....

somebody plz correct me if I am wrong but thats what I was able to gather after reading up several posts.
