Power Trunk wont open

I got the car yesterday
the power trunk button doesn't open the trunk
the key fobs don't open it
only the manual key opens it
the button in the trunk closes it though
previous owner tells me its in some sort of safe/security mode
how can i turn this off, or is the guy lying at the trunk is busted?

You can always check the wiring on the drivers side of the trunk lid. Sometimes the wiring will rub against the mechanics and sever some of the wires.

Oh.. And there is an option in the instrument cluster for the trunk opener but I believe it's just a limiter (meaning it only opens part way)

This actually happened to me last week, well sort of. It was weird because when I would hit the trunk open button on the fob it would only pop the trunk but wouldn't open it fully. I don't know if this is the case with you but after closing and opening the trunk manually a few times it began working fine. It was like it had to re-learn where full open and fully closed was. I swear this car has a mind of it own sometimes.

You may have a busted trunk latch/lock mechanism. When you try to open the trunk electronically, do you at least hear the pump in the trunk running or any noise at all coming from the trunk area?

i don't hear anything but i will double check
its just so strange that although it wont open electronically, it WILL close electronically when i hit the button on the lid
i was reading something in the manual, about electronic lock-out, and i think thats whats happening, but the manual isn't clear about turning it off....

did you ever find a fix to this problem? I have the same problem too. Trunk won't open swith the switch, keyless go, or the trunk open button on the FOB. it will only open with the mechanical key.

It used to open with the trunk open on the FOB but now that doesn't even work. Where do I look for snagged wires?

As a holiday gesture, I can (try to) help you fix this for peanuts. This pain is part of Benz standard money making designs.

What sort of skills do you have to help yourself?

What is involved is electrical, mechanical and electronics... if you're up for it.

It will be faster to involve your favorite shop but not cheaper.

Chances are, it's a broken wire in the wiring harness that runs along the trunk arm on the driver's side of the car. This area has a wiring harness that moves up and down with every open/close of the trunk. Eventually those wires break after hundreds of movements. It's a common issue. Happened to me. I took the car to a car stereo shop (guys who work with wiring harnesses for a living) and they patched it up for $35 + tip while I had a coffee and a donut next door. I saved time (and money) by having the trunk liners removed before I got there so all he had to do was attend to the wires.

The issue and how to remove the trunk liners are all on YT and can be found with minimal searching.

This guy nailed it. Happened to me twice since I got the car. Annoying, but a relatively easy fix.
