Because I could buy it at a huge discount at the end of the model year (W211) while the economy was tanking and the car manufacturers and all the dealers were about to commit hara-kiri.

I think performance and fun go hand in hand. Not to mention, it is a combination of all of those...

I agree. This isn't an 'either or'. It's all those things. In my case, driving the wagon, I wanted a 7-passenger Ferrari and this is the closest I could get

Coming from a 97' E320 which was very clean and nicely modded I wanted nothing but an AMG. The E class was not too big or too small and had the looks to go with the performance. My whole obsession with Mercedes started when I was 15 and my buddy who was 29 at the time had an 01' E320 in all black with chrome wheels and I said, "damn, that guys is pimpin," lol. Since, I have turned into a BMW hater and will not own anything but AMG when it comes to Mercedes.

I had just turned 40 and I wanted, "My cake and to eat it to." I call my E55 a, "Banker's Hotrod." Daily driver usability, 4 doors, status, luxury with an absolute beast of a motor up front!

Best car I've ever owned.

I was looking for an AMG obviously, the power was a big turn on. C63 is a hotrod, but the interior lets you down, to much plastic bits. The S Class price tag, will give you a heart attack, so the E Class was a nice compromise. The luxury feel of an E Class, is better suited for me, then the "C" Class. The E63 was the logical choice. You have the performance of a big block, with the luxury ride and feel of an E Class, and the AMG on the back and the sides fenders doesn't hurt either. One should always strive to better themselves. AMG does that for me.

We (I) needed a family sedan with a little oomph and also i was looking for a sports car for fun.I looked into buying 2 separate cars but finally decided on an E55 as it fits both cars into one.
Nothing like a family performance sedan that's fun to drive yet luxury/executive enough to drive to meetings/parties.

You forgot a big one......value!
The sticker on my 2006 was close to $100K. I bought it 40 months later for a third of that

I don't know, it's just something about the massive front brake calipers that got me. I think the E55 is everything you listed above.

I think everyone bought the E-class because of a mixture of everything on that list. It's the perfect all around car.

one thing that hasn't been mentioned and was ONLY reason I bought my e55 over the cls55 or sl55 is the classy yet UNDERSTATED styling. while i'm not one to care about what others think, I didn't want the image that comes with those cars. I prefer the modest styling of the e55 (for now, given where i am in life).

The CLS 55/63 are nice, but has little headroom in the rear. IMHO the E 55/63 Class has that classic look about them. And I love looking at those huge brake calipers and rotors. The roundness of the exterior lights. I like the E Class is the best design that MB has ever produced. And the fact that you can haul 5 adults, as compared to the CLS is a plus in my book.

All of the above.

A 'swiss army knife' - with added style.

i needed something that could accomadate the 2 kids in the back as well as the looks and performance, it was a toss up between the E55 and the M5!

The E was more practical than the M, and had more features\toys.

I think this is the all in one package. I have been a long time BMW guy and made fun of my dad for all the Benzs he has own over the years when he switched from BMW. I always though that Benz was an old man car. Floaty and slow. But this AMG is a whole nother beast. I love the go fast on demand plus I can carry my kids in the back if I want. I have had my car since April and I have not looked back since. In fact I am looking for another AMG to add to the stable just dont know which one I want yet. I am an believer now.

Floaty - A tad bit... Slow - by no means does that apply

I think they only way up from here involves a few more cylinders and a pair of snails

The AMG is not slow at all I mean the standard Benzs,

Yeah a few more cylinders would be nice with a pair of snails.
I wish that option was in the E class. Not sure I have the funds for a SL65 but that would be pure hotness. How about a SL600 tuned??????

I love my baby from the side but honestly from the front, she is not gonna win any beauty contests.

If I wanted beauty, I would have went SL or CLS.

I wanted raw brute force power and couldn't swing a 65 at the time.

Wow. All of you have some really nice things to say about the E. That's good to know, it looks like a lot of people love their E for many reason then one. Thanks guys reading up on all your post has really helped me do my research on this car along with the CLS. And to be honest I'm leaning towards getting the E. Everyone that has ever considered the ClS has done it for the looks Nothing else. from what i hear from all of you it's not just for one thing it's for a well rounded, sleeper looking car. That does not attract too much attention but can still make you say (for lack of a better word) woooooohoooooooo.... Lol

Thanks again.
