Top Speed
My 4 door beast is slotted to arrive late fall. It will look great next to my 2 door beast (01 911 TT w/EVO Stage 2). Will it be possible to take delivery of the car when final options are picked with the speed limiter having been changed? Is swapping out the stock ECU with say the Renntech ECU my only option? I noticed that they have remapped the ECU for the SL55 and E55 2003/2004 models for better performance.
Glad to part of the MB family!

my modded porsche turbo does 180mph+ and when i got my e55 i thought it would be too slow. But i only went above 160 like a handful of times in 3 years. And in all honesty, even with upgraded suspension, an AMG is no porsche above 150mph! It's actually a bit scary whereas a porsche just starts to feel safe at 120mph+
heres a video of me hitting the limiter in my 01 E55

Thanks for your input. With all the changes to the 04 car, do you think that maybe going above 150 would feel less scary. The E55 will never feel as tight or as stable as a 911 TT but I hope that it feels nothing like the E500. Test drove that car a few months ago and it felt like a boat on the road.

The other option is to have the speed limiter removed at AMG in Germany. You would somehow have to take European delivery in order to accomplish this. See AMG Club Forum for more info.

Means: no chance for a US customer to get the speed limit removal (or better said "raisal") from AMG directly.
I heard about some dealers who upgrade the ECU software with a original version of the deristriced AMG software but this is not recommended. To my knowledge, AMG does some other tweaks too, not only to the ECU software but also tranny and air suspension software. The best choices for aftermarket mods are Renntech (or MKB in Europe/Middle East) and Brabus.

the good news is that the 04 has AWESOME brakes! that thing should be close to porsche when it comes to stopping and porsche has the BEST brakes in the world!
well my 01e55 has ****ty brakes by ANY standard. for a car with 350hp to have only 2piston floating caliper brakes up front is a disgrace.
The force required to stop from high speed is ALOT. To get the ABS to come on you have to STAND on the pedal with all your strength. That 'BAS' device seems like just a myth, lol.

The M5, now almost 6 years old, still outperforms the new E55 for stopping distance.
A comment from Automobile (in their comparo of E55 vs. M5 vs. RS6) was as follows:
"The Benz does not decelerate as well as expected. It electrohydraulic brakes feel strangely passive, heavy and lifeless that feeling was backed up by the longest 70 to 0 mph stopping distance of the group".
I'm due to pick up a new E55 within the next 2-3 months so I'm not throwing stones out of spite. But my expectations with regard to the brakes will be low.
but who cares really? I mean the e55 lost to the rs6 and the m5 because they were rating as 4-door sports cars. If I had to pick on to beat on for a weekend, I would pick the rs6 also. But for everyday driving which is what i use my e55 for, I think its the best. For stop and go, in traffic, etc, the e55 with automatic and softer suspension, quieter interior is far better trade-off for me. :-)
