Broken Pano Roof!!

Broken Pano Roof!!
So here's the deal....Last week on my afternoon commute home from work I decided to open my pano roof to enjoy the cool refreshing air. I rarely use the darn thing for fear of some sort of catastrophic failure and resultant costly repair. Much to my dismay, I get home pull into the garage roll up my windows and and my pano roof starts grinding, clicking all while closing very slowly. The roof evently stoped about half way open and would not budge. After several forward and reverse cycles I reluctantly give up. I immediately called for an service appointment with my local MB dealership for the following morning. I recant the events to my SA who looks over the roof and states that it appears a little crooked and perhaps off track. Well after a few hours get a return call informing me that the roof rails are bent and gears stripped as well. Here's the kicker folks..... his estimated cost to remove the headliner just to close the glass panel (not repair) $1500, and nearly $7500 to replace the rails, gears, and motor!!! My SA menotined fequently seening the same issues in customers cars who don't use there roof often, basically becoming done in by a build up of dirt and grit on the rails. WTF??? Anyone else have similar issues and/or repair estimates?
BTW, I'm not bothered by the cost of repair but the inconvenience of it all.

i just got the same problem myself. the part i dont understand is if i reset the sunroof from the rear sam fuse, i can go back to the pano and close without any hesitation or clicking. if i cycle it through with the shades after a few times it will start the clicking/grinding sound. if you just need to get it closed, push on it physicaly while holding the close button and it will close ok. i havent had time to take the headliner off yet but im guessing its something in the motor. if the rails were bad it wouldnt close on its own just from a fuse reset. just my thoughts.

I had this exact thing happen to me last year. I brought it to MB and they said the motor had broken all the gears. They replaced the motor but said they think the rails might be bent and that some tab broke off. The price was $800 for the motor I think. It actually might have been cheaper cause I had other things done and the total was $800 something. They said to keep the motor safe they didn't hook it up so I didn't have to worry about accidentally opening it and having it go off the rails again. They said to have the rails replaced that's going to be another $1500. I just told them to hold off on it since it was winter at the time. I haven't brought it back to have the rest done.

had a similar issue with the pano not working. The spring on mine broke off and a plastic piece snapped. They told me I needed to replace several parts and the total would be $400 with labor. Sounds to me very expensive what they quoted. I will find the link to my thread I started.

Don't hate! Once they break, my distronic can be repurposed towards a homing missile system and the keyless-go button can be used to launch said missiles. As for the Panoroof, I never appreciated it much until I got to see it from atop a 3 story building, but I admittedly am hesitant to use it for fear of a costly breakdown.

RE: Pano Issues
Never had any Pano issues, mine works perfectly. I do open it every couple of weeks and also have my indy lube it annually as part of maintenance.
$7K sounds a little high, but very glad I have a warranty.

You guys that are not using yours for fear of breaking them do realize the irony in that right? By not using it, you make the Pano roof more likely to break than if you occasionally use it.

the more you use it the less likely it is of breaking, pano roof components bend\break as they get stuck when opening if they havent been used for a while.
