Door Handle Replacement DIY

it seems to me that they make the handle impossible to take apart after it has been produced... therefore having to replace the whole thing. im sure if we could get inside the handle and clean up the contacts on the switches, it would work fine

Mine just went out on me the other day. I was trying to get the replacement from my local dealer ( actually cheaper too), but the woman on the phone which did not seem too well informed claims that it is Just a sensor, no door handle. Can anyone confirm or deny her claim here ? Parts.com shows as a handle as well as everything else in the post, just want to be sure prior to getting it.

The front handles are easy. How do you get the rear handles off?I took the door skin off but still ca not expose the screws for the handle. Lots of stuff blocking it. I tried to clean my front handle but its dead.Only locks now.I see a small tear in the posable rubber of the plastic part from wear/age that most likely let water/dirt into it.

Inside the door handle
Hi I opened my defect door-handle to have a look inside. It was not difficult and I took some pictures of the switches that fails because of water and rust problem.

It is not necessary to take the door cards off to replace the rear handle Remove the rubber seal at the level of the door handle and you will see a hole through which a T20 torx driver can be inserted and a captive screw loosened. The removal is similar to that of the front door handle described earlier in this thread. Mercedes specifies using a 250mm (~9.75 inches) which is difficult to come by.
Furthermore both front and rear doors use the same antenna that is not part of the door handle itself. The antenna is located elsewhere in the chassis.
If you have a STAR system with Xentry/DAS you can also check the actual values (pushed or not pushed) of the "push" button and "pull" button on each handle to confirm it is the issue. If you've got a "pull" button issue, I would also go in to the "actuations" menu and activate the door release motor for that affected door. Finally, the diagnostic procedure also recommends you check the continuity within the door frame (remove the interior of the door panel and probe the wiring connectors with a meter) - but I suspect the vast majority of the time the issue is a bad door handle.
Part #s for those living in North America can EASILY be obtained by getting yourself a free subscription (only users from NA are eligible) to the official Mercedes Parts Catalog. (Google Mercedes EPC for info). You can then plug in your VIN #, and the system will tell you the correct part # accounting for body color, model-line and year. Print this information out and the parts counter guy will love you.

ya i replaced my driver side front handle and all of a sudden my driver side rear one died. weird. oh well, i almost never use the rear one, so i can't justify spending another $150 to replace it

Just completed this as per the instructions on a 2006 CLS55 AMG.
Only difference is that the Hex bolt is located about 2 cm up towards the window rather than straight in the hole as shown in the pictures.
Have to angle the screwdriver up towards the window on a 45 degree angle.
Other than that the replacement from OE Discount Parts was perfect and I would order from them again without hesitation.

Awesome thread, thanks! My driver's side door handle wouldn't unlock the car when I tried to open it anymore. After reading this thread, I removed the rear handle and plugged it into the front to confirm that it was the contact switch under the handle that went bad and not something further upstream. Everything worked as expected with the other handle.
I ordered a replacement door handle from oediscountparts (got it two days later) and installed it tonight in 5 minutes. Everything works and I only spent $140 as opposed to $500+ from the dealer.
Thanks again!
