At one of our drag gatherings at Capital Raceway, there was an 06 M5 SMG and my 06 E55. Both stock with around 6k miles on them. The owner of the M5 gave me the keys to his car and I made a bunch of passes.

I think ran the quickest time in his car, which was a 12.57@117.9 on a 2.1 short (this was several years ago, so I might be off a hundredth somewhere ) and my car ran a 12.16@115 on a 1.85 short.

Same day, same driver, same track.

The M5 could not get out of the hole quick enough with the neutered US LC on a prepped track.

I'll see if I can dig up the old posts on it.

Do your friend a favor and tell him to check his I/C pump. Your description screams "bad pump". There is no way any healthy 55K should be heat soaked after one pull in cool weather.

Not surprised by your results at all Awol.

Starting to think this dremel'd throttle body is the GREATEST FRIGGIN MOD OF ALL TIME!!!

Gotta understand, for years the M guys have been torturing us with the same vids.....the M slowly pulling away at higher speed.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8aVZ9...eature=channel

Even the friggin wagon...same result.

Could the TB mod and snorkel give the E THAT much power? Pretty cool vid

To chime in here, dont count any of those gtboard or m5board videos for much of anything.

Look at the real world track times. You wont see a stock m5 run an 11 second 1/4 very often, and there are plenty of members here that have in the stock e55s.

All I can really comment on is my car. It has proven track times with the most basic of mods. Pretty solid runner considering it now has 98k miles on it.

We ran to 155mph on the last pull and I had the camera guy and I was always pulling.

And that stupid tb grind is the best mod for sure. So simple, so noticeable of a result. The day it was done, I noticed a stronger top end for sure, traps went up 2 mph as well.

And yes, the m5 was in full 500hp "mode" or whatever

Amen to that! A bunch of M5 and M6s are running 13's or near it.

Your car is very beastly considering it is mostly stock and untuned. You held your own and then some, up to the limiter.

That doesn't help if the guy isn't a NASA engineer or F-16 fighter pilot.

The only reason people always say "OH BMW M5 Pulls up top blah blah" Its the Gearing Blah Blah..NO..It's the Heat-Soak E55 Blah Blah.. NO

It's that it has 40 more HP than an E55 that's why it starts catching up as the E55 has the Torque to get it there sooner. Once they both have 507 hp ,bye bye M
It's actually a combination of factors, not just the gearing. I'm talking strictly about an M5/M6 with SMG, as the V10 was specifically designed around that transmission, not the 6 speed manual. The M6 has a slight weight advantage of 100 pounds over the M5.

The SMG is a 7 speed automated manual gearbox with less parasitic loss compared to an automatic transmission with a torque converter, which makes a big difference at triple digit speeds. In the SMG's most aggressive setting, the shifts are much quicker than in the Mercedes. Combined with an 8200 rpm red line and the V10 from 6000 rpm in it's optimum power band, makes these cars pull hard on top.

From a FWY speed roll, providing the M is in the right transmission settings, both cars are about even up to 130. After that the M starts walking. From a dig or slow roll, it's the Mercedes all the way, as it would take the M quite some time to catch up.

Both are great cars. They were just built with different philosophies in mind.

Some of you folks just flat out over analyze the simplest things. When I smoke an M5, I do not ask if they car was in 500 mode, and care less about this gearing, power under the band, blah blah blah. I smoked him, settle at that until the next M5/6 comes my way.

But not only for gas, oil as well. I always have a qt. of Castrol in the trunk. My CLK is about as thirsty though.

Well if there was no over analyzation- this thread would be on page 3...

With your mods I dont see any reason to assume that you would not smoke a stock M5, let alone a 6 speed. To me its apples and oranges. A stock M car with the weaker 6 speed versus a car with probably 80 more whp. No brainer.

Everyone knows the E55 is underated in hp stock and the S85 engine in the M reads about true to spec per many many stock dynos. So add in your mods and you walk away as demonstrated.

Nice win.

I didnt post this to cause a ruckus, or create deeper beef against the bmw crowd.

I posted a challenge on a local forum. He accepted. We ran. My car is faster.

Find me an m6, and Ill race that too. The other local SMG m5 wont race me

this was all in good fun gents

My point is more.......people internet race too often and even after all of the stats, dynos, magazine quotes,etc.. in the end, the driver still has to properly launch the car and that there is where many drop the ball. We have all raced and beat a faster car I'm sure.

Just so much more than simple stats even if just stock to stock. A win is still a win, 400 mode or not, many seem to forget that the person that is ahead wins.

Im pretty sure you told me you were running an agressive eurocharged tune awol.is the car on stock tune and trapping 121 because your trapping the same speed as me with all my mods, you sure you don't have a pulley on there too lol.
