Stolen Key- Whats the cheapest option to replace the key

I know I can go to the dealer and get the key replaced but I actually lost two keys. I found a guy on ebay that sells blank brand new keys and it looks like he has sold a lot of keys.

Does anybody know what the steps are after I buy a blank key? Can the dealer reprogram the blank key>?

Straight up answer is sometimes they can, sometimes they can't. (program aftermarket keys)

That's the scary part of the aftermarket key market. ALSO and this is big, the dealer must program the key regardless and I would bet the bank that if you did not purchase it from them, they will charge you labor to program. Takes like 5 mins tops but you know the stealer....... "reprogram key and road test to inspect....1 hr labor"

Unless someone here has a guaranteed key dealer that has worked several times, you may just have to eat it and go to the stealer. Be ready....they aint cheap.

I would not suggest that you should purchase the key fob from Ebay..Since the keys already code to someone else cars. It's hard to get reprogram..stealer will charge you arms and legs to get it done..Cheaper to buy it new without the hastle!! My $.02

yes I drive a 63 but why spend extra money for no reason.

This guy on ebay has sold over 500 keys so far so I have to believe that this has to work and is a cheaper option.

Has anybody got a key re-programed and know how much it cost. A new key from the dealer is 500

One thing I have learned with MB is: Trying to take the cheap way out usually comes back to bite you in the @ss. Hey, if it works, let us know.

Or he refunds the money if they don't leave negative feedback. And key prices from stealers have been posted at cheaper rates than you post.

I tried the ebay approach and the dealer could not program it to my car. The way you can tell if it will work is stick the key in and turn it. If it turns you have a 50/50 chance the program will take. If it does not turn you are dead in the water.

Ebay keys are

worthless. You can't program them, the dealer can't program them. The oem key place that used to sell them is no longer allowed.
Dealer only.Shop the dealers since they charge between 2-3 bills.

It does take an hour to program, trust me I did mine in front of the dealer.I had a lost key and ordered a new one and when it came in and the dealer said the car was ready for it and they didn't get a chance to program it.

Omg it took like forever in 90 degree weather to program.

Please wait!!!! Programing, please move key to position 2 please wait, please move key to position one omg that day was hell lol

E 63S Wagon Renntech, E55 Renntech, SL65, SL 55 030, ML, bunch of old ones--they come, they go...
Stop--did you say that the ....

dealer wants $500 for a key? Really? Have you not done some homework on this?
First thing to do is run, not walk, to a legitimate dealer and get this over with. $500 is absurd, even at the biggest city franchise store.

WOW, I am stunned. I guess they really are near 500$. There is a dealer online selling parts and they show MSRP at around 430$, they are offering keys for bout 100bucks off.

Hard part is Drop's dealer is for sure gonna charge him labor to program if he did not purchase from them so it's kinda gonna be even either way.

Here is the link to that dealer online. MAKE SURE YOU CALL THEM and have them make sure are getting the right part if you do this Drop.

AMG not gonna take a part back like Walmart so be careful.

if i were u, just spend the money at the dealership. when they order the key, they get it directly from the factory so it's pre-programed and the metal key is already cut for you. cost me under $250 for a keyless go key

I have a very good friend who heads up the parts department at my local benz dealer. I was told all the keys for mercedes (newer models that its) come out of Texas. Granted I wasn't paying that much attention at the time. Sometimes I'm waiting for parts to be pulled when some 60 year old guy needs a replacement key. Part of me want to say they all come from Texas and they are the only place in the USA that is authorized to do it. Then to add to this story of what I think I remember... most standard benz keys are like $250. Next time I'll pay a little bit more attention. Also the dealer will want to see your ID along with your car's registration.

Ok two things. 1st is that the keys are ordered to your vin. You can not reprogram a key. The dealer simply orders the key to your vehicle. When we get them in we simply insert it into the ignition. The process is then automatic. Sometimes it takes a few seconds and sometimes a few hours. I try and give them to the customer and send them home and tell them to put a battery charger on the car and do it themselves if it does not work right away. You can not charge some one the time necessary to deal with it when it takes hours and hours. There are two codes. A fixed and rolling. It has to count through the rolling codes to match up to the key it is replacing. 2nd if you get a replacement for the key that you lost then it will render the old key useless. If you get an additional key then you should have the lost key temporarily blocked. I would go to the dealer 1st with all of your remaining keys and check which one has been stolen. This should cost around a half to one hour of labor. Then have them order a replacement for that slot. There are 8 slots with 3 keys on each slot. Once these are used up then you have to re-key the whole car. Very expensive.

MBH is correct, all keys out of Ft. Worth

Poster above is also correct - you can order an ADDITIONAL key (assuming you have extra slots), to add to the rest of your keys.
OR you can order a REPLACEMENT key which will render your old keys useless.

Both of these posters are 100% correct.

It is not possible to re-program a key.

$500 is ridiculous. We sell them for under $300, including the mechanical key. Price is no different for cars with keyless-go, etc....they just need to make sure they order the correct key for your options.

In Canada, we now need to send MB a copy of both driver's license and vehicle registration with key orders before we can give you the new key.

I thought I'd revive this thread instead of starting a new one to share an experience I just had. I called MB North Houston and got a quote of $340. Then I called MB Houston Greenway and got a quote of $190, he then asked if it was for my personal car and told me it would be around 300 bucks. haha I guess there's the wholesale to dealer markup. Next on the list, MB Sugarland.

.
My car only came with 1 key when I received it (the simple black one)....I made the seller buy me a second key (the nicer one with the chrome trim) and it cost around $220 IIRC.

The dealer wanted my VIN and current registration before they'd order it. The new key came with the corrrect mechanical key and supports Keyless Go. All I had to do was put it into the ignition and set it to Position 1 for a couple of hours.

The gauge display said something about "Learning Key" and after a period of time the key was correctly paired with the car and ignition. Works fine in either the ignition switch or in my pocket when I want to use Keyless Go.

The so-called "Programming" is easy.... but I think getting the correct type of key in the first place is key (pun intended).

Haha MB Sugarland quoted me over $300. Want to help me get a key at MB Greenway? I'll buy you a beer! I was going to call back and ask what I needed for a wholesale price. I can get my brother's tax ID if they just need to sell to a business.
