Thumbs down Not A "True" AMG

Just got the latest issue of MT and come to find out..."The naturally aspirated 6.2 liter V-8 that's currently the mainstay of the AMG Mercedes Benz lineup is so good, we're wondering why the engine developed in house by AMG and code named M156 is being replaced by the twin-turbo direct injection 5.5 liter M157 so soon! A well placed source says you can blame the recently departed head of AMG Volker Mornhinweg. AMG was working on its own replacement for the M156, a 6.0 liter engine with twin turbos and direct injection and a unique 80 degree vee block. But Mornhinweg reportedly ordered work stopped on the engine soon after arriving at AMG". It goes on to say that he always wanted to be on the board of Daimler and he is now in charge of commercial vehicle operations a promotion which has him on the fast track. The twin turbo engine is not an AMG engine but a MB design, but hand built at the AMG facility instead of machine assemble. So I guess the M157 5.5TT is not an AMG design/engine but a MB.....even with the issues I have with my '63,,,begining to like the M156 even more

Only the M156 and the SLS are true AMG only products (products designed in-house.) It's kind of always been a "MB designed and AMG tuned" sort of thing.

I really like buttery smooth NA motors with linear power and throttle, but if owning the car is all about tuning, brute drag strip power, and a go fast(er) style, then nobody wants them.

p.s., what "issues" do you have with your E63?

Just one major issue that is a off idle hesitation,,,had it since new (many posts on here about it),,,dealer(s) can't (won't) do anything about it, MB looked at it says it's there, but say nothing is wrong,,other members have the same issue one even has it on his SLS,,,some are lucky and don't have the issue and I'm not,,,other than that,,,car is great

RE: M157 Engine

AMG designed or not, I'll withhold judgement until actually driving an M157 car.

What is interesting is that most every road test to date of the M157 has shown very similar 0-60 and 1/4 times as the M156 cars. The real question will be whether the M157 can be tuned like the M113 Kompressor V8 and M275 V12 to make serious power.

From a personal perspective, if I can get comparable power to my SL's V12 in a newish E-Class I might just capitulate to a W212 at some point down the line.......although the 212 styling has not grown on me at all.

Looking forward to an M157 test drive soon.

I think the aftermarket tuner will "fix" that for you. Less restrictive intake and exhaust will do wonder on force induction vehicles. I'm on the fence about the W212 too, the interior is just plain cheap looking. We'll see!!

I would've loved to see a pure AMG 6.0L twin turbo engine

I KNOW! It's very strange. Plus AMG is only giving testers the upgraded turbo package that packs nearly 600hp!!!!! Nearly 80 more hp and mountains more torque and it's the same???
