I found a SL55 with 38xxx miles for a decent price but i just found out today from my service advisor that the car was bought back by MBZ due to electrical problems. I will be getting a buyer inspection done this weekend before purchasing but I want to hear you guys opinion about it.
Thanks,
Mike

Most of the problems these SL's have had is either with the abs suspension, or hard top... costly yes... so be careful. Thats the one thing why I went from looking at SL's to Es.

NEVER.....
The problem is that in attempting to repair the dealer/repair station will induce more and more complex problems. These cars are so complex they are past, 95% of the dealers abilities to repair them.

Dude...MB basically said, your car is crap and we can not figure out what is wrong with it so we will take it back like a cheap shaver at Walmart. Why would you even contemplate this decision?

your saying a "decent" price so not sure what kind of deal you are getting. it would have to be a truely killer deal of the century type of thing. the mb star diagnostics is extremely thorough, so if they are hooking it up to that and still unable to locate the issue i would be extremely concerned.

I got a Lemon a few years back, at Chevy dealer (Chevy Duramax Dually 3500 with 12,000 miles) the reason I did is because dealer offer 2 years bumper to bumper warranty, the problem due to lemon was temp race to high (I guess is your right to know the problem).... well, I save $17,000... hard to get a discount (few years back on dually's). Truck look in mint excellent condition, outside, inside.... till Today not a single problem, hook up a 14,000 Lbs trailer in the middle of Summer.... 110 F , up and down in to the mountains... nothing, temp is good, already put 28,000 miles still running like a champ. Just oil change + set of new tires + some mods,
Custom exhaust, Air Bag system, Edge Juice w/ attitude (chip), Intake and others.... maybe I was lucky but excellent experience. If I save alot of $$ with bumper to bumper warranty for 2+ years I may think about it again....
Ask to disclose what was exactly the problem, do your search, make sure you have a very good savings, ask for bumper to bumper warranty for 3 years (I don't think Mercedes will warranty a car that they know they will loose money) also keep in mind that re-sale value will be bad, when I got my truck I know I will keep that truck almost forever...

Thank you all for the inputs but I decided not to purchase the vehicle without having to do the buyer inspection. Seller is asking for $33K for a 05 SL55 with 38xxxx. The vehicle was lemon TWICE, in CA and NV. My service adviser pulled up the record and the lemon was due to electrical problems.

Once a lemon, always a lemon.
I had to lemon law my W211 which was bought back by MB about 2 months ago.
Basically the reason most MB cars are lemon'ed is because the most experienced MB mechanics/technicians/service can not correct a problem with the car after at least 3 attempts.
Why bother with a lemon when you can have the peace of mind with a non-lemon?

Miles and miles of wires in these cars. One tiny wire frayed and shorting would cause havoc with the ECU. You'd be pulling your hair out.
Stay clear. Lots and LOTS of hard times sales out there of great cars.
