What should oil quantity reading be in service menu
The 55 seems to keep wanting a qt added.
Seeing there is no dip stick I'm guessing the engine was designed to handle an oil overage.
I have never seen it ask for 1/2 a qt

Great question... When driving and viewing the information on my IC, it changes rapidly depending on my driving style... If i'm driving in granny mode, it'll be around 5.5-6 ... and when I get on it, is when it jumps into the 7-8's... Is this how your vehicle is acting too, anyone know if it's normal?

You need to check the oil with the car OFF! While running, it will show a lower quantity as oil is flowing through the engine. After changing the oil in my cdi with 8 quarts, the display would say 7.5 with the engine off, and much lower with it running. I figure the other 1/2 quart is sucked up by the oil filter. If I am not mistaken, if the oil is low, the display on the instrument cluster will tell you.

The most reliable way to obtain the correct oil level in the M113.990 engine is to use the factory dipstick tool. If the engine has been running, you need to shut it off and let it sit on a level surface for about 5 minutes to let circulating oil drain back into the pan (this is true for either using the dipstick or taking a reading off the oil level sensor).
An oil change with filter requires 8.5L (approx. 9 quarts) of fresh oil (and this assumes you drained out both the front and rear sumps of the oil pan - not suctioned the oil out, which leaves the front sump full). I always slightly underfill after a change, take the car for a drive, let it sit as per above, and then take the reading off the dipstick tool. Then it's easy to top it up to the correct level on the dipstick (at the 167 - 169ml marker). You definitely do not want to overfill.

The amg manual states 9 quarts. Also, the car has only one pan with two drain plugs which you can see by a star diagram of our cars. Lastly, as per star update the w211 amg is one of the only few Mercedes which should never have the oil removed via suction or vacuum.

on my 55 i put it into the 3 reset click mode (if it has a name) and turn the ign to on but i do not start it, and while on a level surface, it reads 5.5 quarts. would this e low enough to throw a light? 2 quarts seems pretty low to me..

OMG DO NOT ADD 2 QUARTS,you will blow your seals or even the engine.
Dont take any advise from these people that just got the car.
Its showing you how much is in the pan while the car is running and its supposed to show 5.5 and get up to 7 while on load.
If the car needs oil,it will tell you.please tell me you didnt add 2 quarts, that will put you over 10-11 quarts in the pan.

it will measure the oil and tell you either OK,or add a quart,or if you added 2 quarts it will tell you to remove oil warning.
If the car needs oil it will tell you while driving,it will say at next gas stop, add a quart.
edit make sure you dont start the car when checking,it wont wrok if the car was started and makes you wait 20 min before showing the readings.Doing this while the car sits over night will let all the oil drain to the pan.

thanks all...... I think someone in all the posts I got the response I was looking for. In the service menu it will read around 5.5 quarts when at the right level as this is the pan reading ?
If i did an oil change today and went into the service menu it will read 5.5 ?

Does anyone have an accurate answer as to what the oil quantity should read in the service menu? I have not found a correct answer. I read that the w11 e55 takes 8.5 litres in the pan and .5 litres in the filter for a total of 9.0 litres. Am I correct? Someone has tp know the correct answer. What does the factory manual say? Should the reading on my dash be 7.4l or 8.4l when full?

The oil needs to be warm, and the engine shut off on a level surface to get a true oil level reading.

The oil service menu is NOTORIOUSLY WRONG in all aspects. The reading value it returns is in MILLIMETERS OF THE SENSOR. The only way to properly check the reading of the car is with an OBD Reader or STAR and check the oil level sensor. Full oil is 68mm on a CLS55, but I would imagine there's no difference on the E55.

Seems like a lot of contradicting statements in this thread. Do we have a definitive answer? I didn’t even know this screen existed so I checked mine this evening after sitting for a few hours, read 6.5qts. I did a change with 9qts and filter about 1.5k miles ago. Not very happy if I’ve already burned 2.5....

Refer to post #9. The manual will tell you when to check the oil level (definitely not when the car is running). If I remember correctly, waiting times vary depending if the oil is up to operating temp or not. The oil level check is the cluster is not an accurate way to check oil level, as it only jumps in 0.5 L increments. You could have 8.2L and it'll still show oil level ok. The service menu will tell you an exact oil level, assuming the sensor is working.
IMO the most accurate way is to use the dipstick, follow the measurements as stated in the WIS and you'll be good to go
