ticking sound at idle but not lifter related???

Hi guys purchased this car back in october and I am having a loud ticking sound from the right side of the engine . it does not get much louder as the rpm goes up.I think I isolated the noise with a scewdriver <stethoscope trick> to the part in red of the picture. What can this be and is it hard to replace?the lifters do not make noise.\
Thanks
Erick

You place the tip of the screwdriver on the area and put your ear to the handle.

It should as it follows the same theory as a string on a cup telephone.

I had an odd ticking sound from my 63 as well. Only heard it under light acceleration, 10-20%. Took the car in and they did the cam lifters under warranty.

I heard the sound again this morning so I'm guessing it wasn't the cam lifters.

I'd be very interested to know what the outcome of your noise is so I can take mine back in with some information in hand

Someone correct me if i'm wrong...

It seems like every AMG i fire up has a tick to it, regardless of model.

We had an SLS come off the truck on Saturday & it has a tick.

fwiw, the injectors are pretty noisy on these cars and make a distinct ticking/clacking sound.

Do a search on the Forum there's a Bulletin on the 6.x engine.

Use 0/40 M1 oil afterwards and the fleece oem filter.

IMHO junior members should realize there are some smart people on this Board who willing share info learn how to search!

I used 0-40 oil and purchased the oil filter from Mercedes Benz with my serial number so I guess I got the right filter.
I have ( I think read all the posts on all the boards with the 63 engine and could not find my solution). The car had all the lifters and intake cam/ adjuster replaced back in October before I purchased the car.sorry can't find the bulletin.
Thanks
Erick

Thank you for sharing the history and your diligence! I hope those savvier than I about the engine can help.

Have you joined the AMG Private Lounge? The answer might be there with factory AMG folks. You'll need your VIN to join.

As for my E63, the noise is loudest after startup, as the oil hasn't made its way to the valve lifters yet. After about 10 seconds the ticking quiets down alot. It is most pronounced on very cold mornings. But there is still a slight tick, even after the engine is warmed up. I have taken my car in to have it looked at, and I was informed by the AMG Master Technician, that their isn't anything to worry about. That it is normal for the M156 engine to make these noises. So until I start hearing a clacky bang boom, then I start worrying.

Mercedes now says to us 5-40 oil not 0-40 . can this help?why would they change only on the 63 engine and not on the 55 engine??

"Thank you very much for your post. This occurs as the automotive fluid standards have changed in the meantime (in May 2008)

AMG recommends the use of the following oils:

- Mobil 1 5W-40 for M156 engine (63er models)
- Mobil 1 0W-40 all other AMG engines (as well the AMG diesel engines that was used for the C 30 AMG)
- Mobil 1 5W-50 SLR engine

Before that change, the Mobil 1 0W-40 was used for the 63 models as well.
We hope that this information helps.

Best regards
AMG Private Lounge Team"

The oil won't do anything different, sorry.

btw, that's a relatively older post. The 229.5 is 0W40 and the 229.51 is 5W40. 0W40 is used in the M156. Issues are primarily about emissions systems with the oils. This has been discussed numerous times, do a search.

p.s., the TOS of the AMG PL says to never cut and past anything from there to post elsewhere on the internet. They don't like it at all and I'd hate to see them cut back on new posts and info because people are pasting direct quotes onto the internet (especially the chat sessions with AMG management that only members/owners get to read.) Paraphrasing is okay...
