Timing.. need HELP *PICS*
The camshaft gear has "L" and "R" marks but
Do I use these marks to align? If so where do I align it to?

I placed the pulley to 40 degrees TDC already.. is this right?:

I was trying to follow this diagram pardon my arrogance but rather found it confusing

What is that diagram referring to? Looks like the keyway are aligned like this:

But when the camshaft gear is back on.. the "L" and "R" both sides are off and pointing at random directions.
Where are the aligning marks?

You should be able to see the timing mark on the front cover above the pulley. I can't see the mark in the picture but it looks like you have the pulley in about the right spot.

There isn't a very good underdrive timing pointer on the timing cover case. There are also two arrows on each gear from what I recall. The L and R correspond to which side of the engine the error is supposed to point at. The camshaft alignment tools help out some. I also think in the timing document somewhere it says that rotating the crankshaft 14 times will bring your copper timing chain plates back up to the arrows if you did it right.
I did mine with the timing cover off and it helped a ton.

Out Of Control!!
All good info in here. Get the cam tools to align cams and set Crank (lloks like you already did). Before you even think about cranking the motor over make sure you turn the motor over a few times by hand (put a socket on crank and turn) and make sure it doesnt get "stuck" anywhere. Good luck

Whatever we're tuning!
You didn't mention if you removed(or unscrewed it by about 1.5") the timing chain tensioner on the right side of the block. The cam locking brackets are a must!
Also heed the advice of a master....Ahmad. Turn the engine over with a socket and long extension a couple of full revolutions and make sure there is no binding.
DO NOT START THE CAR UNTIL YOU DO THIS FIRST!!!

Believe me, I'm not starting the car at all before I know 120% the timing is right and even then I will check it over and over again. I'll turn CS over many times (with spark plugs out) to make sure there's no binding anywhere.
Thanks again guys and steve the cam install helped ALOT

Did you tie wrap the chain to the each cam gear before you removed them? That is very important especially if you don't have the cam alignment brackets.
Hope it all works out!
