Fuel Filter Replace - Absolutely Necessary?

I'm going through the items for my service F: (81K Miles)

The FSS Identified the following service Items, and WIS has the items listed as the folowwing:

Item# 4 - Replace combination filter
Item #7 - Passenger compartment -Tilting/sliding roof: clean slide rails and slide shoes
Item #9 - Replace air-cleaner insert
Item #10 - Replace spark plugs
Item #12 - Replace fuel filter, Replace coolant.
Item #14 - A whole bunch of checks - too many to list

And

Item #13 - Oil Change (not on the list, but I did it anyway, since I just got the car used, and have no idea when the last one was done)

Its not that I don't want to do it (the Fuel Filter), i'm worried that anyone mucking with it might introduce those pesky fuel leak problems. I know I can do this myself, but this may be something that I would "wisely" leave to the pros to do... However , from reading the horror stories in this forum, those "pro's" sometimes manage to screw this up and introduce problems by not doing it correctly...

Also, I see threads that say that you need to replace the Fuel Tank in order to do this - (which is not what the WIS documentation says)

In any case - Is this something that I can ignore and maybe put some fuel cleaning additives to compensate? I really don't want anyone potentially breaking that part of the car - which has had so many issues if I can avoid it...

You could wait

till the 100k service for the fuel filter. An oil and filter change is always indicated every 10 k miles
you used mobil 1 0w40 syn,right?

Just making sure you know how much those are?

Benz only sells the filter and FUEL pump together as a unit so when you replace "the filters", you are replacing the fuel pump as well.

Been years for me but it was either 700$ PER or 700$ total for both.

Whatever you decide...MAKE SURE you have the tank pretty low. My tech is also one of my best friends and he was swearing me up and down for bringing her in near full. Car smelled like gas for weeks and weeks.

He says it's not the funnest job in the world. Never heard of new fuel tank....that would be unreal on cost.

I say wait until 100k but need to replace ASAP then.

Tech BTW told me he has NEVER seen a fuel pump go bad yet on an E55 so I think you could push to 100K.

Only PZEV cars have to have the entire fuel tank replaced. Code 917 in the vehicle data card. I guess they don't trust mechanics to seal the pump(s) adequately after replacement.

Mine has 122000 miles at dealer last time I asked about changing the fuel filter, " We have never had a issue with the fuel filter by not changing them, but we have with doing it". They recommed not changing the filter. Besides when the fuel tank leak is sorted out the tank may eventually be replaced. I am watching this on NTSB.

just wait until you smell the gas fumes in the back seat of your car. That means its time to change your fuel sending unit (fuel filter)

What does ethanol have to do with smelling gas fumes? Just curious or are you trying to be funny? I smell gas right now and my car has never had ethanol in the tank.

I was just completing my Schedule F maintenance and stopped at the Fuel Filter replacement. Sounds like if it ain't broke, don't try to change it at the moment. I'll ask my indy.

. . . but does the fuel you use have some ethanol blended with it?
