My belt keeps shredding!

Help I need help. I just replaced my idler pullies and tensioner pulley as well as the tensioner and I am still shredding my belts. What do you guys think the problem is. Could it be my crankshaft pulley causing the shredding. There is some play in the tensioner pulley but I think that is normal. Any input would be greatly respected. Thanks Guys

Are you wobbling? Also, what kind of belt are you using?

These things are sensative under high load. Check your pulley for wobble; look at the belt and make sure it looks smooth without vibration.

What brand of belt? I noticed less shredding with Dayco vs. Gates belts.

I don't know if I am wobbling. I'll check tomorrow.

I've also been using Gates' belts and have not experienced an issue.

Heck, I have wobble and not shredded a belt.

Check the tension on your tensioner, if it's too loose the belt can jump ribs and shred. This is also true if one of the pulleys is not aligned properly ( sticks out more than the rest ).

Do you have an aftermarket pulley or stock?

make sure your pullies are aligned with a laser. Look at the old belt. Is it the forward or rearward ribs that are shredding?

Step two is to look at your pullies and make sure there are no burrs or cuts that could cause damage.

Look for runout on the pullies

THanks guys! My mechanic will take a look at it on Weds. I hope its not the crank pulley.

could an extremely tight belt be the cause of it? I remember when your belt slipped off Johncy it seemed like the belt was too small since the tensioner was all the way back and it still didn't fit without finessing it in place. I would try running a longer belt and see if that helps.

I posted this awhile back but I bought a older ASP that had the larger pulley ring welded on BACKWARDS. I threw countless belts and chewed up everything until we figured that one out.

They have not had any problems since.

Least it's there for ya if you need it.

She been throwing belts for a long time? Since you installed crank pulley?

Just sleuthing with ya.

I think the 525 belt would be too big for my setup because I dont have spacers in the intake plenum. When we goin racin bro?

I've been through about 6 belts now and its getting on my nerve. Is it possible to shred belts because of a bad bearing. My bearing is making a loud whurring noise and gets louder as I rev it higher.

I am running the K080514 on a 180 pulley no spacers.. I have to ask this question though.. The phenolic spacer goes between the intake and the surge tank (Air Intake Runner). That means the Supercharger is in the same position, so no belt change would be required, right?

I have read the spacers that go under the SC are bad news. I run neither. If belt is too tight, it will shred. Usually a bad tensioner would just spit the belt, not shed it.

Here is what I will suggest you to do, maybe it will help,

You have to know the width (height) of both pulley together on the crank and then measure one of your friends or forum members and check, it could be that you pulley going a little bit inside or a little bit outside, just check this.

You may want also to check the rest of pulleys too.

He said he's changed ALL the other pullies in a quest to fix the issue. Also go look at this thread for belt sizing. https://mbworld.org/forums/w211-amg/...t-numbers.html

I had the same issue and did all Johncy2000 has done. Going back to an ASP welded design crank pulley fixed my issue.

I'm changing my bearing because its making a wierd noise upon cold startup as well as idling. Well see if that helps. If not, then the problem has been isolated to the crank pulley.

Let the engine idle and look at the pulley- Is it true, or wobbling? You should be able to get a sence of run out just by looking at it while rotating. If it is wobbling, that would be part of the problem. If it is wobbling a lot... it may be the entire problem.

Its actually not wobbling at all. But the other day I saw that my belt was pushing forward as it was idling. The belt wasnt running straight kind of like a wiggle in the belt.

It really sounds like your pulley is out of alignment with the rest.

I suggest your take video of your car running idle at differnt rpms for a while to check from above the engine and below if possible and see if it could help !!

If not, then why not trying to put small cam with some light and drive around while shooting a video then you see, it may help !!!!!
