Engine Oil Level - Visit Workshop! ..sensor?
Had this warning pop up a couple of times recently. Had an oil change done 4-5k ago and added about half a quart to a quart since.
I've searched but want to hear opinions. Sensor?

I changed my sensor and it has not come up since. But you should definitely keep your eye on the oil. Get a compression test to be on the safe side!

These sensor do boy bad, so a reasonable person would check their oil level with the dipstick. But there are those of us, that would simply add more oil, without checking. Having too much oil is as bad as not having enough.

I had a local shop change mine they said it was quite an easy job. But I would check it with a dip stick. and yes if its shot it will still read on the dash, well mine did. The 1st step is to check it with a dip stick, its normal to burn a bit. If its to low the 2nd thing you should do is get a compression test. If the oil level is fine I would say the sensor is bad.

E55Dimon,
I can't believe you asked that question. This is taken out of the owners manual.
When checking the oil level, the vehicle must be parked on level ground with the engine at operating temperature, the vehicle must have been stationary for at least 5 minutes with the engine turned off.

1 Oil dipstick
2 Upper (max) mark
3 Lower (min) mark
To check the engine oil level with the oil dipstick, do the following:
Open the hood.
Pull out oil dipstick 1.
Wipe oil from dipstick 1, ensure that its clean.
Fully insert oil dipstick 1 into the dipstick guide tube.
Pull out oil dipstick 1 again after approximately 3 seconds to obtain accurate reading.
The oil level is correct when it is between the lower (min) mark 3 and upper (max) mark 2 of oil dipstick 1.
If necessary add oil.
I hope that this helps you out.

Your welcome E55Dimon,
I wanted to blast you , but thought the wiser of it. Because some people, honestly don't know
And I wasn't exactly sure if the E55 had a dipstick, because previous BMW I've owned didn't have one.
But relied on sensors to tell you your oil level. Which, I hated.

Dont add oil bro.my sensor was doing the same when it was going bad.it got to the point where it said shut engine off in red while driving.
Its about 150 and its under the car on the oil pan.its a simple sway and i think its only 3 screws.

Agreed. I dk what to do now.
Tried to put another dipstick in one of the holes in that area and came back with nothing. I unscrew the oil cap and there's def oil there but who knows how much. Idiotic not having a dipstick.

Dam, I was right in my assumption. E55Dimon, I apologize for razzing you, about the dipstick. Get your sensor replaced ASAP, or buy yourself a real dipstick

Mb knows that the typical driver has no idea how to change there oil.we do have a dip stick hole and you can buy the stick at the dealer.

I think the no dipstick idea comes from the earlier FSS design of MB maintenance. They don't use FSS anymore and now it's time/mileage based like the rest of the world.

I think I paid about 140-150 at my local dealer, his sensor is shot because in the menu where it shows how much oil it just has - - like mine did where its supposed to show 6.8-8.5 ect.
